About Me

BIT OF BACKGROUND - I am a violinist, composer and improviser. I also play piano and am interested in exploring different soundworlds in whatever music I am playing. When I first heard a violin live, right in front of me, I knew that I wanted to play music and to explore sound. So, I began lessons at school and began the long journey that has led me to how I am as a musician today. I have worked with many musicians playing music of different genres both as a band member and as a session player here in Brighton and in London. This has included playing in orchestras, folk rock bands, string quartets, singer songwriter duos, in a barn dance band, as a solo player, in lots of situations from Christenings and memorial services to busking on street corners, to studio work. ************************************************************ ********************************** ALBUM - In 2006, I worked on new projects with Andrew Liles. As well as contributing to two of his albums, 'Black Sea' and 'Black Sheep', the work we have done together has also sparked off lots of ideas that are filtering their way into new pieces. In Autumn 2006 , I finally pinned myself down and put a solo album of original work together and Andrew played a transformative role by doing a wonderful job of mastering the tracks for me. Some of the numbers have been played at gigs over the last few years and others are new pieces that explore new directions.Released on 28 August 07, 'Wood and wire' will initially be available at gigs only. I have put 4 tracks from it on the music player, just as a bit of a taster and to show the kind of soundworlds I have been exploring. The album has a mix of melodic tracks and more experimental work on it and it comes in handmade recycled card packaging with original artwork. Each cover is slightly different. You can read track notes in my blog.******************************************************* ****************************************TRACKS ON THE MUSIC PLAYER - All played and composed by me.TRACK 1 - Grit - From 'Wood and wire' is inspired by sounds and sensations while mountain walking. TRACK 2 - Skeem - A wayward band marches seriously like they are trying not to step on the pavement cracks. I wanted to make a format to solo over.TRACK 3 - imp 1 - Not from the album. Most of my new material arises from improvising and this is a sketch from early November 2007, unedited, exactly as it came into being.TRACK 4 - Dog miles - Another track from the album, inspired by the surprises you can find on well-worn routes.TRACK 5 - Wood and wire - The title track from the album, pretty much how it emerged. I was imagining a Kora and people dancing.TRACK 6 - imp 2 - Another improv sketchbook idea. Unedited. ************************************************************ ***************************CURRENT PROJECTS - I play with an East West fusion band called Jasveena. Some of my compositions feature in Jasveena sets and you can currently listen to another piece of mine, Treen, on their page. I also play with John the Savage who mix contemporary classical, jazz and electronica into a cinematic blend. You can hear two of the tracks we have worked on together - Hoser and Bouncing Ball - on the JTS page. Their link is on my friends list as well. I am currently working on my solo material and on building interesting sets that combine composed and improvised elements. ************************************************************ ******************************

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: This is it!!
Band Members: Just me - although - I am interested to meet musicians (and possibly dancers) who want to collaborate on new projects, particularly with a mix of composed and experimental or improvised elements. I am also interested in creating and performing original work with others that combines real instruments with processed and found sounds. Send me a message if you are interested (and local!)
Influences: I heard lots of music growing up in a house that often had T Rex blasting in one room, dancing to Motown in another, my grandmother in the armchair la-la-ing to some classical music, and BBC radio in the kitchen. I also heard lots of live music in the homes of relatives and neighbours, and also in the city I grew up in - everything from marching bands, to amateur and professional orchestras, church choirs, rock bands, singalongs ... So I guess it is no surprise that my influences are eclectic. *********************PERFORMERS - Hilary Hahn, Andy Sheppard, June Tabor, Eileen Ivers, Oregon, Tasmin Little, e.s.t., Viktoria Mullova, YoYo Ma, Capercaillie, Trilok Gurtu, Martin Hayes, Joanna Macgregor, Stephan Grappelli, Angelique Kidjo, The Brodsky Quartet, ELO, Yasmin Levy, Truls Mork, Ella Fitzgerald, The Portico Quartet, Gidon Kremer, Dhafer Youssef *********************COMPOSERS AND SONGWRITERS Ralph Towner, J.S.Bach, Jan Garbarek, Edgar Meyer, Claude Debussy, Astor Piazzolla, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Benjamin Britten, H.I.F.Biber, Arvo Part, Bela Bartok, Philip Glass, Aaron Copland, The Beatles, Maurice Ravel, Steve Reich...........I am also inspired by some of the musicians I have been lucky enough to play with over the years and some of the fab music I have heard on myspace. I feel like my friends space is a jukebox of wonderful stuff to dip into. *********************ARTISTS - Tina Modotti, Len Tabner, Andy Goldsworthy, Kurt Jackson, Henry Moore, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andrew Wyeth, Anne Desmet, Ansel Adams, John Virtue ****************************WRITERS - Alan Bennett, Jeanette Winterson, Anne Michaels, Donna Tartt, Richard Mabey ****************************OTHER INFLUENCES - wide open spaces in the world and the adventures you can have there, favourite places that I like returning to, favourite radio stations - like R3 and Radio Fip, shapes and lines on the land, skywatching, walking, sitting on hilltops, daydreaming, having a sketchbook in my pocket and letting ideas run into it.
Sounds Like: Sounds like me! Could be a clear and powerful classical sound, or an oddly lilting folk melody with dips and dives, or maybe something with energetic rhythmic drive, dancing percussive sounds, or strange, more abstract soundworlds......
