Pettersson & Fredriksson seek new forms of accoustic expression. Using
mandola and nyckelharpa they explore both the local Swedish folk
music tradition of Västerbotten and an inner, personal landscape.
The duo consists of mandola and lute player Daniel Fredriksson and keyed fiddler Daniel Pettersson, who was voted world champion on nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) in the year 2000.
Their first record Brand (swedish for fire) was released in 2002 on record label DRONE. Brand featured mainly traditional tunes from Västerbotten. The record got good reviews and with its fierce playing and very heavy sound for an acoustic duo-album it left a mark in the folkmusic world. The second album Virek was released in 2005. Virek is a word in an old dialekt from Västerbotten, meaning someone who has travelled far. The record focused more on newly composed tunes and an even more experimental approach to arrangement and musical interaction.
In 2006 the duo teamed up with with fiddlers Thomas Andersson and Maria Jonsson in an effort to go "back to the roots". The result is the "side project" SLATTA 2006 - a CD with traditional dancing tunes from Västerbotten and a concert show with tunes and tales. The next step in the saga that is Pettersson & Fredriksson is clouded in darkness, but the third duo-album will come during 2008. The first one was red, the second blue. The third one will be green…
