Stonehenge: Genus Loci

About Me

I am a Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic monument located near Amesbury in the English county of Wiltshire, about 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Salisbury. I am composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones and I am one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world. Archaeologists think my standing stones were erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC although my surrounding circular earth bank and ditch (which constitute my earliest phase) have been dated to about 3100 BC. I and my surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury henge monument. I am also a "legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument". Currently the local chief who claims ownership of me in this temporal unit is named "English Heritage"........ Many have claimed ownership of me but I stand upon the shores of time and bow to no mortal.....During the long reign of the Dark Queen Thatcher, my children were persecuted by her hordes of blue darkness. These Romans set up barbed wire and lines of stone hearts around my sacred body. My children were beaten and bloodied as they tried to celebrate the solstices by dancing within my skirts as they had for years uncounted. After the passing of the Dark Queen a new Robber King has allowed the gathering of the tribes.....English Heritage have provided this interesting interactive map of me....http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/stonehengeinteracti vemap/index.html My surrounding downland is currently "owned" by something called the "National Trust" apparently an organization originally set up to help the local aristocracy avoid "paying death duty taxes" by buying their expensive houses off them but allowing them to still live there paid for by everybody else.....I am surrounded by an extensive ritual landscape some of which dates back to the Mesolithic era around 8,000 BC. This bit is currently a "car park". I have been described by the local robber barons (Members of Parliament) as "a national disgrace" as they have built stuff all over me including a busy road. I like Hippies, but not the ones that climb on me or treat me with disrespect. I also like Pagans and Druids as they are cool and good friends to me.....Stonehenge welcomes all peoples and religions....we are all one under the dreaming skies.....Click Here to get a tiny myspace layout!

My Interests

Astronomy, philosophy and sacred architecture. I really like free parties with lots of music, happiness and children dressed brightly. I have always enjoyed these gatherings especially at the mid winter and mid summer solstices. Some have abused my hospitality, especially those Romans with their riot police...I might be getting a few different humans mixed up here..... width="425" height="350" ..
