About Me

Giant chalk hill figure on the side of a hill in Cerne Abbas, Dorset. He is a scheduled monument in the care of The National Trust. He is 55 m and 51 m wide. His club is 36.5 m long. Erect phallus 9.2 m long. No-one knows the age of this figure. It has as yet not been directly dated so theories abound. Here are a few: A 17th Century political satire. An Image of Hercules. A celtic God. A Saxon God It was cut by the monks of the nearby abbey as a joke. The first possible mention of the figure is in 1694. This has led to the suggestion that it might be 17th century. Other than that this is just one theory among many. It is probably best to keep an open mind about when this figure was cut until direct dating evidence is available.Whatever it's date might turn out to be it is a striking chalk figure with club and erect phallus.Because of his prominant member,he is considered to have a fertility function and women go to the giant hoping to concieve.Folklore says that the giant was Danish and had rested on the hill. While he was asleep the local villagers killed him and draw an outline round hid body as a warning to any other giants that might be around. There are many pagans who consider the giant to be sacred. At present he has a painting of Homer Simpson next to him which was a publicity stunt for the Simpsons film. The paint was supposed to wash off in the rain. It has'nt.Some pagans were upset as they considered this to be a desecration of a sacred site.Other people thought this stunt was funny and those pagans who complained have been made fun of and have been told they have no sense of humour.Unfortunatly this goes to show just how much our society is more interested in a silly cartoon charactor than in the heritage of our country. It is also sad to see that people out there have no respect for the feelings of others. This My Space Page is dedicated to the Cerne Abbas Giant so he can get the respect he deserves.
