THE HISTORY
Born in a po-dunk city in Indiana, DrumWild took to the drums at age 4. It was either that, or holding meaningful conversations with rows of corn. With an AM radio on the edge of the floor tom of a toy drum set, he played along with those new songs by The Beatles in 1969.
Unable to afford real drums at the time, he took up the family instrument (trumpet) in first grade. That same year (1972), he stood before the class for show-and-tell, pointed to Hollywood, California on a map, and proclaimed, “When I grow up, I’m going to move to Hollywood and play drums.”
Everyone laughed, including the teacher. His family said it was nice, but “how are you going to pay the bills?” DW continued playing his drums at home, while learning the trumpet.
In 1975, he picked up a music book called “Elton John Greatest Hits” and began to each himself piano music and guitar tabs.
In 5th grade (1976), he moved to a new school and discovered that there was a drummer shortage. This school provided drums, so the transition was natural. By this time, he had learned how to read music and also had developed an ability to hear music and replicate it on an instrument. He was 1st Chair in the marching band, pep band, jazz band, and other band functions from 1977 to 1983. He also marched the Indiana State Fair after graduation, and then continued on with the school marching band as a camp counselor in charge of the drum line.
From 1977 to 1985, DrumWild studied with Indianapolis’ premier drum instructor, Richard Paul. Mr. Paul was his instructor at Ball State University, where he studied Percussion Arts and Music Theory.
He had won various awards for his drumming, including a series of 1st place performances at the IISMA competitions. He got one 2nd place award, missing 1st by one point, by Dr. Maxine Lefever, Director of Percussion Arts at Purdue University. This was to serve as a lesson to “keep the ego in check.” Later that year, Dr. Lefever invited DrumWild to perform with the American Musical Ambassadors, which involved a 28-day tour of Europe.
In 1983, DrumWild and 14,000 others auditioned for the first-ever Cincinnati Reds High School Honors Band. Out of the 14,000, only 125 were selected. DrumWild was the leader of the drum line and organized all of the drum music in 15 minutes. If you ever see the performance eon video, he is the only drummer (and possibly, the only musician) wearing a cape.
In 1983, DrumWild enrolled in the Percussion Arts program at Ball State University, under the direction of Richard Paul. In 1984, he decided to get less formal and play bass with the local punk band, The Beertonez (http://www.myspace.com/thebeertonez). This lasted until the fall of 1985.
By 1986, DrumWild was curious about Hollywood and decided to set out to California. First, he spent six months in Bakersfield with family. With nothing more than a change of clothes, $10, a 5-pound bag of M&M’s and a dream, he hitched a ride to Hollywood. There, he lived on the streets for the better part of a year, drumming in metal bands and living the Sunset Strip hair metal dream. Surviving on the kindness of waitresses and strippers, he got to perform with bands that opened for the likes of Motley Crue, Van Halen, The Bullet Boys, and others.
1987 was the year that DW got involved in the computer business in order to finance his art. From 1987 to 1996, he was involved in a variety of projects. 1996 was the year that he wrote an album for Filipina pop sensation Mystika. Produced by veteran music producer and famed drummer Jimmy Hunter, DrumWild, the album featured work from artists such as Bobby Birch (bass for Elton John) and Steve Caton (guitar for Tori Amos). DrumWild worked with these artists to chart the songs and monitored the production to ensure that the songs were headed in the right direction.
In 1997, Jimmy Hunter had officially dubbed him “DrumWild,” after an online chat about his lack of a web presence. By 1999, DrumWild dot com was launched online.
1997/98 was the year that DrumWild got involved with the band SUN ON SKIN. This band has since branched out into a series of other bands, all enjoying success.
In 2000, DrumWild joined the band SECRET without an audition. From this band, he recruited bassist Kevin Sherwood to play guitar with his project, WHIPLADS. This band lasted until 2005, when it split up.
Around 2002 or 2003, DrumWild had gotten involved with NOODLE MUFFIN (http://www.myspace.com/noodlemuffin) and began drumming with them for live shows. After a while, the head writers recognized his talents and began to have him play a variety of instruments on various recordings. He is still recording with them today (2008). In late 2007, DrumWild volunteered to fill in and cover drummer duties for rap/hip-hop act Casanova Jones.DrumWild is currently available for all professional situations. Please, no bands trying to make it.
