Bassist Hogyu Hwang, was born in Korea and has been the recipient of many major scholarships there. In May of 2002 he left Dankook University, in Seoul to pursue a full scholarship to The Berklee College of music.
Hwang studied at Seoul Jazz Academy, Berklee’s International Network partner school in Korea. He has since presented a series of guest artist clinics there. A dual major in performance and jazz composition, Hwang has the distinction of holding the bass chair in both of the college’s finest large ensembles: the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, led by Professor Greg Hopkins, and the Rainbow Band, led by Professor Phil Wilson.
Since coming to Boston, Hwang has toured Spain, France and Japan. He played the International Association of Jazz Educators annual conference in 2005 and 2006, and performed live radio concert on Boston’s NPR affiliate, WGBH-FM.
He records with and gigs regularly with trumpeter Jason Palmer, He also played with Billy Hart, Mike Tucker, Terri lyne Carrington, Jimmy Heath, Joe Lovano, Hal Crook, George Garzone, Frank Tiberi, Ralph Peterson, JoAnne Brackeen, Donald Harrison and Dave Douglas. He has performed at prestigious venues like The Kennedy Center, The JVC, Monterey, Beantown, Rochester, and Phenix Jazz Festivals.
Since coming to the USA Hwang is fast becoming a name to watch.
