Originally a classically trained clarinetist, I became interested in blues and jazz during junior high school and took up the saxophone. Along the way, bassoon was added which began a love for low register instruments.Graduate of both Bakersfield College and Cal-State University, Fresno. Seriously studied electric bass in the mid 1970's and became a first call electric bassist for any gig requiring a skilled sightreader. The acoustic doublebass is the latest instrument that I am available on.I worked the nightclub circuit full-time in Bakersfield along with a full-time day job during the '80s with numerous bands during the "new-wave" and "punk" period. We always tried to sneak in some "old school" and jazz tunes as well.Other experience includes backing up in concert, guest performers like Dizzy Gillespie, Louie Bellson, Tommy Newsome, Chuck Findley, Ed Shaughnessy, Bennie Wallace, Pete Christlieb, Carl Allen, Jim Snidero, Noah Howard, The Drifters. Some local Bakersfield area groups played in were/are: Sneakers, Ain't No Thang, Dr. D's Debris, Sanctuary, Cold Sweat, Fat Daddy Blues Band, Jerry Garone Blues Band, The Old School Band (TOSB), The Bunky Valdez Orchestra, Reggie (Arvizu) & Alex (Canales), The Electric Oil Sump Big Band, Southside Chicago Seven, Zanne Zarow Trio, The Bakersfield Jazz Workshop Orchestra, The Bakersfield Symphony, Canyon Hills Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, Valley Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Church. The group is "1/4 to Four" featuring the compositions of Henry Winckel and Paul Perez. It's a mixture of styles and influences, sounding mostly "smooth jazz-like". Here's a video of us at the Bakersfield Jazz Festival May '07:.I am currently freelancing with a variety of jazz combos for clubs and casuals.
Do Dat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsaqlsOZdQk
This is a video from our Grover Washington Jr. Tribute concert performed at Stars Theater, April 11, 2009 in Bakersfield. We played some of Grovers most memorable songs. Paul Perez - saxes, Doug Davis - keyboard, Glen Fong - bass, Paul Cierly - guitar, M.B. Cotton - drums, Keith Hall - percussion/vocals. "Do Dat" features an astounding drum solo by M.B., a nice change of pace from his infectious back beats, while I get a chance to break from the pocket and stretch out.
The Morfin Quartet at the Metro Gallery 8/27/09 Bakersfield, CA. Isaiah Morfin - alto sax, Doug Davis - keys, Glen Fong - upright bass, Canaan McDuffie - drums. "Cherokee" a bebop standard is played at a fairly brisk clip, displaying Isaiah's masterful technique.
