FBE is a ten-headed orchestra lead by bassplayer Martijn Vanbuel and was born out of Martijn's love for writing and arranging for semi-big ensembles. His examples are other leader-bassplayer who intend to start simular band throughout the history of jazz (f.a. Charlie Haden, Charles Mingus and Jaco) but also Gil Evans and Kenny Wheeler. It brings back several young up-rising Belgian musicians as well as well-know musicians like Kurt Van Herck and Bart Van Caenegem. FBE tries to create the ideal musical invironment for each one of those musicians through the use of features. But above all FBE is a vehicle for Martijn's search for a personal style in playing and writing and for a good balance between arrangement and improvisation, recognition and alienation, consistence and variation.
