Austraila to build world's largest power station
Roger Davey, chief executive of Melbourne renewable-energy company EnviroMission have been making plans to break ground in early next year on the world's first commercial "solar tower" power station.

"The tower will be over there," Davey says, pointing to a spot a mile distant (in New South Wales) where a 1,600-foot structure will rise from the ocher-colored earth. Picture a 260-foot-diameter cylinder taller than the Sears Tower encircled by a two-mile-diameter transparent canopy at ground level.

The result: enough clean, green electricity to power some 100,000 homes without producing a particle of pollution or a wisp of planet-warming gases. Unlike wind farms and traditional solar panels, which generate electricity only when the wind blows or the sun shines, the solar tower is designed to replace carbon-spewing power plants.

"We're aiming to be competitive with the coal people," says Davey, 60. "We're filling a gap in the renewable-energy market that has never been able to be filled before." And although its final dimensions are still being tweaked, the 50-megawatt Tapio Station plant is just the small model: A half-mile-tall version is in the works for China, and EnviroMission is scouting sites in the American Southwest for other possible skyscraping power plants.

However, the race to build the world's largest solar power station is a setback for EnviroMission due to the Australian government’s decision to award their rival company, Solar Systems the bid for $A75 million (about $US57 million) in nearby Victoria.

See the video which explains it all... EnviroMission Solar Tower

Also check out Discovery Channel segment

Both videos are very cool, I recommend watching both in that order.

As plans are also developing to build these mega solar towers also in Shanghai, Spain and quite possibly soon, the US and eventually elsewhere around the world, we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel which will free us from fossil fuels forever.

Give it up for Solar energy!

IMMEDIATE ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION

It's interesting that solutions to our problems for reducing CO2 emissions are and have been around for ages, but unlike the fate of many past technologies (because they did not guarantee making existing energy companies richer, on the contrary, so they had to be shut down), this technology is looking more and more like it will see the light of day.

Denny Klein of Clearwater, Florida invented this new technology which has already proven itself to be a break through in a number of areas, from a far improved and much safer method for welding to far safer, cleaner and improved efficiency in engines, this is one alternate energy we have all been looking for.

The goal is to continue reducing our Carbon Footprint and our dependence on fossil fuels until we can survive off completley clean and limitless energy such as that which will come from Fusion.

A Mars-orbiting satellite recently spotted seven dark spots near the planet's equator that scientists think could be entrances to underground caves.

The football-field sized holes were observed by Mars Odyssey's Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) and have been dubbed the seven sisters — Dena, Chloe, Wendy, Annie, Abbey, Nikki and Jeanne —after loved ones of the researchers who found them. The potential caves were spotted near a massive Martian volcano, Arisa Mons. Their openings range from about 330 to 820 feet (100 to 250 meters) wide, and one of them, Dena, is thought to extend nearly 430 feet (130 meters) beneath the planet's surface. view article | Future Martians?

Opel Eco Speedster

It's not every day you see a car breaking 17 INTERNATIONAL land speed records in one 24 hour run (avg speed 140mph) and getting an avg. 113 mpg while doing it. Gotta love technology, it would just be nice if we could start using it.

One thing I can say for myself is I love science.

Modern Science is a project I hope to build over time (presently a company of one). Sometime in the future it will grow to be something more I hope.

For now, my theme is on space, and I have a special interest in the matter of new developments concerning Alternative Energy, impacts from our growing population, and so on, a lot of which ties into Global Warming which currently is taking a front seat in the science community. I hope to explore better why this is. To see my passion on the subject, please check out the blog.

If you have any thing interesting which is science related and you would like to see on this page, feel free to leave your own news.

Thank you for visiting.

What it's all about...
We have come a long way, but have we gone too far?
We may have reached the pinnacle of human evolution, a breaking point if you will. The fork in the road is now upon us (This could be the final 300 years for 90% of the species on the planet including humans). Will Modern Science prevail? It could, and I hope.

Here's and idea.... as for Australia... and this is good news BTW – kudos to Australia – way to set an example!!!... Light bulbs account for 12% of household greenhouse emissions. Because of this, one of our continents, Australia, is banning and phasing out the use of incandescent light bulbs across the entire continent by 2009 See Video Aside from dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions, switching from incandescent light bulbs to today's more efficient light bulbs could also save consumers an average of $10 per year on their energy bill per light bulb. - Talk about a no-brainer. Talks are in progress for India to follow the same example and California may soon also be the first US state to follow this plan of action. You don't have to wait for the government to tell you to make the switch. Start saving money and do something to begin reducing damage to the environment as well. Please replace your bulbs today!

Meanwhile back at camp, Bush gets briefed on plug-in hybrid vehicles, White House, South Lawn. Bush reminds the public of his remarks at the last State of the Union address to reduce 20% gas consumption over the coming decades (big deal - I think we're going to have to do a lot better than that Mr. President, I think you should educate yourself better; maybe you should do us all a favor and watch "Future Car" on ABC - how much more of a briefing could you possibly get than that?).

Click Here for the source to much of this and additional recent Climate Change Coverage in the News.

FYI: Be sure to set your reminder to watch a new mini-series on Discovery Channel beginning Sunday, Mar 25 called "planet earth" at 8PM EST. I have a feeling you won't want to miss it!

Also, don't forget to set your reminder to watch the final episode in the four part series I was referring to called "Future Car" Wednesday Feb 28 at 8PM EST. If you get a chance to catch up, especially see the past episode on the future of alternative fuel (it covers all the possibilities - some of which will blow your mind), I highly recommend it, it's very enlightening and inspiring.

Last, Be sure to check out Forecast Earth and Climate Code on the Weather Channel Every Sunday EST 5-6PM (Re-airs Most Saturday 5PM, 7PM and 11PM).

GM's Chevrolet Sequel hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle

Skateboard platform
Like GM's Hy-wire and AUTOnomy concept cars, the Sequel is based on a "skateboard" design, with all propulsion systems, steering, braking and chassis components packed into the car's underbelly. GM says that this allows greater freedom for the car's interior and exterior design.

The 12 greenest cars of 2007

Honda Civic GX

The Civic GX, which runs on compressed natural gas, gets the ACEEE's accolade of greenest of the green. Mileage figures of 30mpg (city) and 34mpg are propped up by the car's EPA emissions rating, which is the lowest of all vehicles on the road. As well as being certified as an advanced technology partial zero emissions vehicle (AT-PZEV), the GX also is rated by the EPA as an inherently low emissions vehicle (ILEV), meaning it conforms to standards for zero evaporative emissions.

Here, I'll share something with you... off the hip...
Our Biggest Challenge
It's time for our biggest oil and energy industries to look into the future (as tempting as making that last 100 billion dollars or two, or three...??? The buzzer has sounded and it's really due time for them to collect themselves and get to work helping to develop the world positively. WE ALL NEED TO CHANGE. But they need to set an example, get the ball rolling as you will, they make the most money and have a great influence over our habits, we are dependent on oil like bodies are to blood.

Besides, why wouldn't these industries and groups want to do something positive? What else would any one need to do with a zillion dollars? They've had their time with the fossil fuel bonanza; now change the product and continue to be productive in another way.

Am I wrong? When the bulk of the world's wealth is funneled over to any group, one would hope it would be put to good use, the best use. Not to say that the super rich can't still be super rich, just saying that as a body of one, we should aim a little higher.

You can say what you want about everyone on earth today, but when referring to the future of mankind (all our offspring) it would be the worst tragedy in all humanity if we were doing something more and more each day to destroy the quality of life on an unknown number of levels (which all kinds of evidence is know showing - as you would learn if you read a number of science journals lately).

Just imagine the implications of that? That YOU and I are accountable for. Seriously, just think about it... 50 years from now, people just like us thinking, "I can't believe how they could have wittingly done this to us!" Seriously, what is it going to take, a real smoking gun with a dead body or a million? Or a billion? Hey, why not just half the species in our lifetime, certainly, that would be more convincing.

"It's all NATURAL"? - give me a break, "Hey, let's continue to burn up all of the entire world's fossil fuels, that can't be bad" - Fossil fuels as you know being a gathering of millions upon millions of years of ancient sunlight created carbon from mass buried plants and animals. Yes, carbon is good on many levels, it's not only a building block of life, and it's proving to be quite valuable in practical applications as well. Being wasted as a gas in our atmosphere however, is not one of them.

Calculate the odds... If 20 experts came to you and said, don't do this stunt it will end disastrously, but a handful of (let's even say another 20) experts say, "No, no, it might not end just like that exactly... or maybe it's looking that way but there's really nothing anyone can do about it now, before or later, you're committed. Besides no one knows for sure, etc, etc., maybe these events or signs leading to all the hysteria will all just finally go away and everything will be roses again"

Would that seriously be convincing enough for you? When someone says to you, "We don't know for sure, no point jumping the gun adopting policy to deal with it yet, (while they're probably thinking "What difference does it make, has anyone considered, that just maybe, the Earth will get bad regardless of how much oil you burn at this point, every man for himself, at least we're making every last billion we can...").

This kind of response to [A L L] the warnings is not just counter-productive, it's quite vain and irresponsible; It's like saying "We have convincing evidence accepted by half our brightest peers, that this person will die and we even now have an idea how and maybe even a good hunch by whom but we can't and may as well NOT do anything because there is no BODY yet. (Point - ensuring safety of the life should come first)"

WE ARE LITERALLY STUNTING (OR LESS FACE IT) KILLING THE FUTURE OF MANKIND UNLESS WE ACT NOW

We depend in such a major way, on the Oil and Energy Industries, on all industries. We must convince them to change, adapt, and do it quickly, and we must agree that some sacrifice and innovation may be needed to reform humanity so it may exist on this our only planet for decades and centuries to come.

I don't mean to bash all the industries, oil companies, stock holders, consumers have you. Half are coming around, choosing humanity over stone refusal to accept change. Entire agencies, groups, societies, corporations, cites, states, governments, countries and even entire continents are beginning to take this so seriously, they are admitting the existence, the likely cause and now are only focusing on the challenges which lay ahead, they are making change happen.

This very good. But at the same time, it is all very bad that we had not started making changes 100 years ago (nipped it in the bud before they cycle really got a jump start), 50 years, 30 years, (NEARING POINT OF NO RETURN??)...10 years ago and now, every year we wait, soon every month... as the significance it will have 30 years, 100 years, 300 years from now is profound.

Seriously, what the IPCC, the AAAS and so on are trying to say is, if we absolutely do not digress to alternate technologies soon, and completely in the next 15 years, the difference between doing it in say 5 years and 30 years is like saying that in 2080:

if it takes 30 years to go green and clean, by 2080 - half the population will be sick or dying, half the species will be gone, sea level rise will not be a question but a horrific reality

or compared to if all humanity stepped up and really worked to get it's act together... sea level rise... maybe just a foot or two (which is bad, but not the end of the world bad), perhaps it rose at a pace we were able to manage the change. We managed to create preserves and save many species of animals, we are able to seemingly sustain and possibly reverse the direction of climate change through the incredible effort by man and the advanced technology and science which helped, again coupled with having the readiness, resources and the time to do it.

But if you think for a second, that there isn't someone somewhere trying to ensure a maximum payout from the world's most valuable resource which they profit, you are truly and utterly delusional. Conceding that point, than you could agree that one way to protect such an asset ( with the reality setting in that it's all going to soon end, regardless) is to increase the output (which we have been seeing all this millennium - right around the time, the oil and energy industry stepped into office).

I know this was a rant, a deep one... probably I will have to remove it because it's too much. While it's not often you'll read something like this (for good reason - I wouldn't be able to write about this if I was a journalist and care about my career), appreciate for a moment that you go to read such a thing, even you feel it nonsense. But take what you want from it. This is a big issue, I'm sorry, but it's not going away.

My suggestion than... accept it, challenge it, do something about it and just maybe, fix it

How's that?Win a Hybrid from a Celebs Climate Contest...Current & the Alliance for Climate Protection are looking for creative and provocative ecospots: very short video messages that will drive your friends, community or government to get involved in solving the climate crisis. Our celebrity judges will select the twenty semi-finalists. You get to choose the winners.
