About Me

I'm a writer. So far I've got one book out. Taking Comfort , published by Macmillan New Writing and available in all good UK bookshops, online and on the high street, now.
It will also be available in the States early 2007, though you can pre-order it on amazon.com now. Go on, go on, go on, you know you want to!
Here's the blurb: What can you do to feel safe in a dangerous world? When Rob Saunders witnesses a young Japanese student commit suicide, he impulsively takes the folder she dropped as she threw herself under a tube train. He finds himself taking souvenirs from a series of tragic or threatening events, at the same time edging towards an uneasy affair with a work colleague. His behaviour becomes increasingly obsessive. The lines blur between witnessing, seeking out, and initiating tragedy. Things spiral out of control when he discovers a dead body while he's jogging in the woods. Stylistically bold, technically accomplished, this fast-paced pageturner explores the anxieties and survival strategies of a post-9/11 world.
See me read from the book .

My Interests

That would be the writing .

I'd like to meet:

Dostoevsky. To apologise.

Music:

All sorts of stuff. Especially stuff with guitars. Then I've got to mention my friend the composer Ed Hughes and his group, the New Music Players. Ed wrote the music to that trailer for my book on the right there. It's performed by the Bath Camerata and I think it's pretty stunning.

Movies:

So many.

Television:

Anything where you have to phone in to get people evicted. Oh, that's pretty much all telly nowadays, isn't it.

Books:

Well I've written one, Taking Comfort , does that count? But of the others, off the top of my head, God this is hard.... let's start with Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. Blindness by Jose Saramago. High John the Conqueror by Jim Younger. Life, A User's Manual by George Perec. Proust. Jimmy Corrigan The Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware. Jean Rhys. George Eliot. Philip K. Dick. Camus. Zola. Homer's Odyssey. Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. The stories of Chekhov. The Man Who Was Thursday by G.K. Chesterton. Under The Volcano by Malcolm Lowry. Thursbitch by Alan Garner. The Murder at the Vicarage, by Agatha Christie. No, seriously. Ask me tomorrow. Oh, and did I forget to mention Kurt Vonnegut?!!!!

Heroes:

No more heroes any more.

Some early reviews of the Axe.

My other book, the historical crime novel A Gentle Axe, has just come out in the UK. There've been a few reviews so far. Here are some quotes:"Lush, and exceptionally compelling, but take your time - ...

She's no bitch.

I'm talking about the blogger who calls herself the Fiction Bitch, though personally I would call her the Fiction Angel. Not only did she write a wonderful review of Taking Comfort, she has now nomina...

End of first draft.

As I type this, it's printing out. My latest literary creation. All 98,596 words of it. That's 396 double spaced A4 pages. At least the first draft of it. I'm not quite sure how much reworking it will...

Characters, one last time.

Dave wants to know if there is anything your main character can't or won't do. As he says, it's widely asserted that we are defined by our actions. But is it possible, or useful, for us as writers...

Where do they come from and where are they going?

Talking about your characters, naturally. Sorry if it seems I am stuck on this character creation thing, but well, it seems pretty central to me. Character is destiny, as someone (Aristotle?) once sai...

What does your character learn?

Well, I'm kind of reluctant to throw this one out there because I have mixed feelings about the whole 'characters must learn something' thing. I mean there are lots of people in real life who are inca...

What does your character want?

It's a way of looking at story that some screenwriters amongst you may be familiar with, if I've got it right. To think of the central character as wanting something, then the story is set up to put o...

Who - not what - is your character closest to?

Another one courtesy of Dave.Who is your character closest to and why? This was a difficult one for me because Rob in Taking Comfort isn't really close to anyone. If he was, he would be able to talk ab...

What's your character's deepest fear?

This one's courtesy of Dave. What's your character's deepest fear?I think it's a great question. And a good way of accessing a character. My mc, Rob from Taking Comfort, is a normal guy at the beginnin...
