Ben Martin

About Me

Ben Martin 'a soloist of immaculate taste and lyricism' (The Guardian) has performed with such jazz luminaries as Kenny Wheeler, Dave Liebmann, Jim Mullen, Andy Sheppard, Tina May, Dave Green to name but a few. He studied with Jan Kopinski and George Carmicheal but is mostly self taught giving him an individual voice on the saxophone. Ben was a member of The Pat McCarthy Band during the 1990's which released two cds 'Hetty's Dance' and 'Art's Blues.' These recordings show Ben's talents not only as an accomplished saxophonist but also a talented composer whose pieces have a strong theme and invoke a certain mood. Or as Ben himself says "I can't stand those tunes that only serve as a vehicle for the sax player to do their wanky noodly bit!" Er...yeah! Ben is also a member of award winning composer and pianist Jamil Sheriff's Octet who have had fantastic receptions at all the festivals and jazz clubs they have visited and the band is on the brink of becoming a regular on the European circuit. Check out Jami's myspace page. Ben plays guitar and sax with Natalie Duncan a fantastic young singer and pianist, check out the piano room myspace page.
