David Blazye:I released my debut album “From The Playground” as The High & Lonesome in 2002 on DB records (Tom Mcrae, Electric Soft Parade). It was Produced by Tim Oliver & featured amongst other musicians Charlie Jones on Bass (Robert Plant, Goldfrapp), Clive Deamer on Drums (Portishead, Robert Plant) & Leanne Narewski on backing vocals. With strings arranged by Amanda Kramer.
I got to do a couple of good live radio appearances, one of which was the Jonathon Ross Saturday morning show on Radio 2. It was pretty odd sitting playing a tune not long after my breakfast being jokingly referred to by Ross as resembling a shire horse due to the rather large trousers I was wearing! There we go…
After a period of promoting the album playing gigs both solo, with Leanne and with The High & Lonesome live band set up I felt I needed to regroup a bit. I pulled together a bunch of new songs with producer Tim Oliver & then began work on a new album with him. Charlie Jones & Clive Deamer once again offered their services, which was great… very sound guys & excellent players!
I moved back to Nottingham with the aim of putting together a new band for live work and future recording. A proper songwriters band like Crazy Horse or The Bad Seeds, not just backing musicians, players who really contribute. It took me a while to get together and we’re called The Reservations. It features my great friend Leanne Narewski (Backing vocals, percussion, melodica) who has sung with me for about 6 years & has a beautiful pure voice, Simon Bowhill (Drums), Chris Sunderland (Guitars) & Andy Tytherleigh (Bass).
My new album is self-titled. It’s produced by Tim Oliver and will be released on his new label Top Cat Music. As well as Charlie Jones, Clive Deamer & the ever present Leanne Narewski (who also contributes some lovely lead vocals on Lament) it also features Reservations drummer Simon Bowhill on three tracks & producers Chris (Merrick) Hughes & Mark Frith. My new album is more stripped down & concise than the High & Lonesome one. That record has more instrumentation, a string section etc… When we started recording the new album I was listening to records like Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush”, Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s “Master & Everyone” & Joni Mitchell’s “Blue”… All of which are very concise affairs and I wanted to follow that example. Each album is relatively short & the songs reined right in to their essence. Anyway if you wish to purchase a copy click here or alternatively it is downloadable from itunes.
