Robert Mitchell

About Me

robert mitchell. poet. singer.
the eight year old bob mitchell arrived in ny
in 1938 and has lived and worked there ever since.
“my story”
i came to a circle of monolithic stone
and dwelt there, in two rooms,
all the rest of my days on earth.
at times i go to explore
but i always return to the space of my own
silence, the balm of my own thought.
angels visit me.
i walk everywhere.

“the MaNHaTTaN Linear” an occasional journal, art and poetry magazine, robert mitchell is roving editor and has contributed many poems, two river press, ny city
“his (mitchell’s) work is in the idiom of his time but it is rooted in the finest and most disciplined traditions of the english language....he writes with honor, freshness, distinction and clean astonishment... his beautiful book (the end and other poems, 1962), whose stunning lyricism is the child of such passion and literacy, balls and mind, seems a lonely orphan in this arid age of poetry.”
- davis grubb author of “the night of the hunter”
“mitchell’s poems are angry and outspoken but are firmly rooted in the contemporary. what non-readers would call anarchy and nihilism in his poetry, is nothing more then the vision of the urban apocalypse, and it is a terrifying one... what redeems man in the time of filth and terror is the continuing recognition that “some unfulfilled act lies about us all” and that “we must continue to create our human love.”

Yikes! A great new CD! Robert Mitchell, my favorite New York poet and lead singer with Missippi Goddamn (see other records for details) left a couple of recorded readings when he visited Cologne in 2000. Studio B, a new all-star band - Sibyll Kalff, Donald Lessau and Slomo Gerhardts of Horse Cock Kids/Missippi Goddamn/Spunx-fame, former Furthur and outrageous painter Andreas Bausch and guitar wizz Heinrich Vater - textured the vocal tapes with sounds and improvisations. The result is an atmospheric and funky album. Short of playing time, but rich with beauty! Easily ranks among the finest music that STRANDED could possibly offer.
Missippi Goddamn
Don’t Flow (CD-R)
(1999)
North Country / Mississippi Puberty / Song 3 / Slow Song / F. Kline / Woodcutter / Last Song
Similarly brilliant self-published improvised session recorded in N.Y. in 1999 featuring Sibyll Kalff, Donald Lessau, Don Christensen (of Contortions-fame!) and wonderful Robert Mitchell on vocals. Poetry and free form groove never mixed any better than here!
Missippi Goddamn
Ding Dong Damn (CD-R)
(2000)
Kingdom Of Nepal / Ding Dong Damn / Light In Your Eyes / Do Not Go Gentle (Blaze Like Meteors) / Choo Choo Train (From Memphis To Mobile) / A Little Man Who Was Not There / River
Second effort of the same project, except for Don X. (aka Don Christensen), who wasn’t available. The only recordings featuring both Andreas Bausch and me (K.K.) on drums. We all had big fun recording this!
