His work has been performed for audiences throughout the United States, Europe, Scandinavia and Asia often in collaboration with emerging or established choreographers. David's dynamic personaility and voice also has brought him success as an actor and commercial narrator.
David has created many musical works for the stage, dance, film, and media artists. He creates a dynamic sound world based on the richness of acoustic instruments and ambient sounds, often blended and balanced with the sweep and strength of electronically produced sound imagery.
John Cage personally chose David's video performance of
27' 10.554" For a Percussionist (1956), for inclusion in the
John Cage Collection at Northwestern University In late August 2007, David was cast as a leading actor in a feature film that is being produced in Finland. Details and movie clips from this project will be posted in the near future. The directors and producer saw his work as the Organized Crime boss in the World Food Program Ad titled "THE GREATEST ENEMY" and cast David with out an audition! This has been an incredibly life altering experience for David, and there seems to be future possibilities in other film projects. David was cast this past winter 2006 in
"TOY STORY" and.
"THE GREATEST ENEMY", two 30 second television public service ads for the
United Nations World Food Program. You can see David in the video clips on this page. The commercials were shot in Turku, Finland. David was acting live on camera as well as doing a large portion of the voice over work for both productions. These public service ads are aired on
MUSIC TELEVISION / MTV Nordic.
David scored the music for the documentary film
Afrikafararna – African Travelers, directed by
Marika Griehsel, produced by
Giant Media Stockholm/Swedish Television South, as well as the music for
Hallelujah Wedding: A Marriage Made in Heaven, directed by
Liv Weisberg and produced by
Swedish Television (SVT).
In the early 1980's. David was a member of the visionary rock band,
Basic Maintenance at the famed New York City club,
C.B.G.B.s. David has been a frequent collaborator with Paris based, American choreographer
Carolyn Carlson. David composed the music and text together with
Mikko L. Mikkola for Carlson's evening-length work
Who Stole August?, and was the musical director for
Swedish Television’s award-winning production of the piece, working in conjunction with internationally acclaimed television director,
Torbjörn Ehrnvall.
During 1979-83, David was
Musical Director of Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians. With the Dean ensemble, he performed and taught worldwide. Importantly, David appeared with Dean in
Dance in America and Beyond the Mainstream, both produced in the US for television by the
Public Broadcasting System (PBS).
Beyond the Mainstream, which is a landmark in dance video, was directed by the great
Merrill Brockway. David was a lead participant in Dean's
Joffrey Ballet production,
FIRE.
David resides in Turku Finland, where he is Associate Professor/Senior Music Lecturer at the
Arts Academy of the Turku University of Applied Sciences. He is a native New Yorker and has lived in Scandinavia since 1990.
A highlight of David's musical education was the award of a
California Regents Fellowship in
The Department of Music at the University of California, San Diego, where he received a Master of Arts in Music degree. David also studied with composers
Bernard Rands, Roger Reynolds and Brian Ferneyhough.
David’s personal musical tastes have led him to immerse himself in such disparate genres as the
Memphis Stax Records’ legacy,
Beethoven’s late string quartets,
Duke Ellington’s big band suites and recent experiments in club oriented music environments.
David's company
Nordic Music Productions (NMP) provides original music scores for the stage, film, television, advertising, and other media.
David is a member of the
Societe des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques (SACD), and his compositions are registered worldwide with the
Finnish Composers' Rights Society (TEOSTO).
