BIOGRAFIA
Studia il saxofono con Federico Mondelci e Steve Lacy , composizione ed arrangiamento con Bill Russo e George Russell. Dal 1979 svolge una intensa attivita' concertistica e discografica in tutta Europa, collaborando con alcuni fra i piu' importanti musicisti americani ed europei come Mal Waldron, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille, Albert Mangelsdorff, Ray Anderson, Enrico Rava, Ran Blake, Steve Swallow, Henri Texier, Misha Mengelberg, Franz Koglmann, Han Bennink, Barre Phillips, Pierre Favre, Kenny Wheeler, Mark Dresser, Paul Bley, Irene Schweizer, Myra Melford, Tony Oxley.Attualmente dirige il proprio quartetto "Icaro" e fa parte del quintetto "Africa Mood" con il batterista sud africano Louis Moholo. Come leader e come freelance ha modo di fare tournee' in varie parti del mondo comparendo in alcuni fra i piu' importanti festivals in Germania, Austria, Inghilterra, Irlanda, Scozia, Francia, Spagna, Portogallo, oltre che in India, Messico, Stati Uniti, Brasile, Israele ed in alcuni stati africani come Marocco, Senegal e Cameroun. Incide per Red, Splasc(h), Soul Note, Hat Art, Intakt, ECM, DIW ed Ogun. Come didatta ha tenuto clinics e seminari a Woodstock (U.S.A), al conservatorio di Citta' del Messico, alla Music Hochshule di Vienna, al conservatorio di Groningen, ad Urbino, Roccella Jonica, Cagliari, Firenze,Roma, Siracusa, etc. Dal 1989 e' titolare della cattedra di Musica Jazz presso il conservatorio N.Piccinni di Bari ed è direttore dei Corsi Superiori Sperimentali di Jazz presso lo stesso istituto. Ha scritto musiche per alcune coreografie di C.Carlson, J.Pardo e per la Teri Weikel Company, oltre che per alcuni lungometraggi dei registi R.Depardon e Tamahori. E’ autore dei libri "Il sax: lo strumento, la storia, i protagonisti" (F.Muzzio ed.) e "Expanding the Horn" (Universal).

Amongst numerous musicians from Italy that have contributed to the international progress of Jazz and European Music Improvisation, Roberto Ottaviano, born in Bari in 1957, holds an outstanding position. Ottaviano's development is connected with the great tradition of afroamerican music, but he has also constantly adapted more and more sources of creative music from all over the world.Studied saxophone with Federico Mondelci and Steve Lacy, composition and arrangement with Bill Russo and George Russell.From 1979 began to play solo performances and collaborate in concerts and recording sessions togheter with Mal Waldron, Albert Mangelsdorff, Ray Anderson, Enrico Rava, Ran Blake, Steve Swallow, Barry Altschul, Keith Tippett, Henri Texier, Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink, Barre Phillips, Kenny Wheeler, Mark Dresser, Paul Bley, Irene Schweizer, Myra Melford, Tony Oxley, John Taylor, Jon Balke, Aldo Romano and Francis Bebey, Trilok Gurtu, Masahiko Togashi.In 1995 he start his collaboration with Pierre Favre playng in different projects lead by the swiss musician such as Window Steps, Singing Drums and European Chamber Ensemble. Actually he plays in the quintet Canto General with Louis Moholo, a quartet with Glenn Ferris, Jean Jacques Avenel and John Betsch, and lead his own projects Icaru(s)Wings and Pinturas.As a leader and as freelance he toured all over eastern and western countries appearing in the major festivals like Hamburg Jazz Festival, Freiburg Jazztages, Bombay and New Delhi Jazz Yatra, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Arco Arts Festival de Madrid, FMP Total Music Meeting, Opus 3 Wien, Belga Jazz Festival, Red Sea Israele Jazz Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, Taktlos Festival Athens, Donhaueschingen, Mexico City Jazz Festival, Paris, Berliner Jazztages, New York Knitting Factory Festival, Le Mans Europa Jazz Festival, Jazz No Jazz Zurich, Rencontres Musicales de Dakar in Senegal and Cameroun.He recorded for Red, Splasc(h), Soul Note, Hat Art, Intakt, ECM, DIW.As a teacher he gave clinics and workshops in Woodstock (U.S.A.), in Mexico City, at the Music Hochshule in Wien, at the Groningen Conservatoire, and from 1989 is the director of the Jazz Study Department of his Hometown Conservatoire.He wrote soundtracks for some ballets (Carolyn Carlson, Jene Pardo and the Teri Weikel Company) and movies. He's the author of the books: "Il Sax : lo strumento, la storia, i protagonisti" (F.Muzzio ed.), "Expanding the horn" (Universal).
