GIOVANNI LO CASCIO
composer/drummer/percussionist
I was born in Rome in 1963 and start studying music in 1969 with Maestro Vincenzo Ricciuti.
In 1976, I studied drums privately with Ivano Nardi and then with Roberto Gatto. Solfeggio with Maestro Peverini.
From 1983 to 1985, I attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston (U.S.A) where I studied more in depth harmony and arrangement.
In Boston I had drum teachers like Gary Chaffee, Joe Hunt, John Ramsey, Tommy Campbell and others.
In Rome, later on, I studied Ethnomusicology at University La Sapienza
During my career I have been working in many different contexts (Movies, Theatre and Dance shows, Television and Radio programs). I composed and played soundtracks for Films, Documentaries, and for Television ads.
I played concerts in France, England, Sweden, Switzerland, Greece, Egypt, Brazil, Jordan, United States and in the Vatican for the Pope, and partecipated in many important Festivals (Umbria Jazz, Gaia music festival-Salonika-, Cairo Opera Festival, Enzimi, Sconfini, Santarcangelo dei Teatri, and in numerous events of jazz, rock and ethnic music.
I taught at the Jazz University in Terni, privately and from 1991 to 1998 to the Timba Center of Percussions in Rome.
I wrote didactic texts for various schools and articles for musical magazine.
In 2005 I conceived the Jua kali Drummers Project within the AMREF rehabilitation program “ Children in need†in Nairobi, Kenya. Jua kali Drummers is a Dulcimer Fondation pour la Musique and AMREF permanent project to rescue children from the streets through music education
I teach Music for Cinema at the Rome University of Fine Arts.
