THE NEXUS PROJECT
NEXUS was formed in 1980 by Daniele Cavallanti and Tiziano Tononi with the idea of creating a long lasting unit/sound inspired by the most peculiar musical experiences of the ‘60s (Mingus, Coleman, Coltrane, Shepp, Cherry, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Liberation Music Orchestra etc.), rended in a contemporary context.
In over 25 years of activity NEXUS has become more and more a sort of a workshop band in which many different musicians have been playing (among many others: Pino Minafra, Luca Bonvini, Paolino Dalla Porta, Roberto Ottaviano, Lauro Rossi, Glenn Ferris, Piero Leveratto, Mark Dresser, Giovanni Maier, Daniele Patumi, Enrico Rava, Gianluigi Trovesi, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Herb Robertson, Roswell Rudd) adding their own voices to what has always been, anyway, the “Nexus soundâ€.
NEXUS took part in the most important jazz festivals in Italy: Milano, Clusone, Cagliari, Bolzano, Trento, Roma, Pavia, Noci, Talos Ruvo di Puglia, Venezia, Verona. NEXUS toured in many European countries and Canada and played at jazz festivals in Wien, Koln, Le Mans, Kempten, Mulhouse, Vilshofen, Gent, Opeye, Saarbrucken St. Ingbert, Tampere, Valence, Vancouver, Braga. The repertoire of the group consists mainly of original compositions by the two leaders. Specials projects have been dedicated to the music of Albert Ayler, John Coltrane, Don Cherry, Roland Kirk, Duke Ellington, Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman.

DANIELE CAVALLANTI TALKS ABOUT THE "NEW NEXUS":
As most Nexus fans know, Tiziano Tononi and I formed the band, and have been leading it since, in 1980. Nexus had different combinations and musicians, and, in my opinion, all were great bands in their own right, but I think that this new version has something special. We presented the New Nexus at AH-UM Jazz Festival in Milan on October 5th 2007. The last and new Nexus features, with Tiziano Tononi sitting at the drums and myself on tenor and baritone saxophones, Achille Succi on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, Emanuele Parrini on violin and viola and Silvia Bolognesi on bass. We've been playing with Achille for the last ten years or so, he was part of the previous Nexus combination and the only thing I can say about him is that he is one of the greatest musician I have had the privilege to play with. Emanuele Parrini joined the Italian Instabile Orchestra in 2003, and since then we've been playing together in different other kind of projects. Emanuele's attitude perfectly fits our music/language, and we feel that the violin and viola, the way he plays them, blending with horns, bass and drums creates a particularly interesting sound. Last but not least, we met, and played with a few times working with singer Tiziana Ghiglioni's band, Silvia Bolognesi, bass player from Siena, and we had no doubt that she was the perfect Nexus bassist, she's just amazing!
We hope to bring the band in the studio soon, recording some of our older pieces in brand new versions. Quoting Gil Evans: new bottle old wine!
