KIKINDA

Kikinda is the administrative centre of Northern Banat, one of the three regions within the province of Vojvodina. It is situated in the far north-eastern part of Serbia, a European country bordering Hungary and Romania.Approximately 170 000 inhabitants live in Northern Banat, whereas the municipality of Kikinda, having 70 000 inhabitants, is the largest in this region.From 1774 to 1874 Kikinda was the headquarters of the so-called "Velikokikindski District", the autonomous administrative unit of Serbia. The District was feudally submitted to the throne of the Habsburg Monarchy in Vienna. Kikinda became the headquarters of this privileged governmental administrative unit by means of a special charter allocated to it by the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. In 1893 Kikinda was granted the status of a town.Kikinda used to be a very strong economic industrial centre of Serbia up until the 1990s. Currently, the industry of Kikinda is in the middle of the transitional economic process.One of the prominent annual cultural events is the International Symposium of Sculpture in terracotta ("Terra"). The other annual tourist event is the Pumpkin Days ("Dani ludaje").In 1996, the well preserved archeological remnants of a half a million-year-old mammoth were excavated on the outer edge of the town area. The mammoth called "Kika" has become one of the symbols of the town. Today it is exibited in the National Museum of Kikinda.There are four secondary educational centres, two departments of the University of Novi Sad, the professional National Theatre, the National Library, the Cultural Folk Music and Dances Lovers' Organisation ("Gusle") and many other sights in Kikinda.You are free to visit us!Nagy Kikinda
