Their story doesn't begin with "...we have known each other all our lives...it is only reasonable that we make a band which will at some point in time become popular...fame, girls, loads of money…”. It is obvious that love for music and their wish to make good punk rock joined them together. This is the reason why they have been successful in their intentions for six years!
Chapter I - Memories
I have known Mladja since I was just a kid and I met the rest of the band on some of the first rehearsals during the summer of 2001, while they were playing their first five songs over and over again. I particularly liked their reliance upon Face to Face and Millencolin, as well the personal touch they gave to their music. Lot of practice for a short period of time and there they were in September at their first gig with Boza who was the drummer at that time. By the end of the year Dusko replaced Boza and owing to their remarkable enthusiasm they made sufficient number of songs for their first demo album "Can't Find My Way". Although it was recorded entirely in home production, served well for their promotion, but for me it is still 1 - (...of course on that album is You Don't Care!). In the meantime between gigs and composing of songs, Misha and Igor came up with Melody Makers, a music organization which would help couple of friendly bands including mine. The idea was to help each other as much as possible since the so-called "serious" productions were of no use. And in June 2002 the first edition appeared "It's Not So Far..." cd/ep recorded with help from Dino "Barfly" Dolnicar. Although there were only 4 songs, three videos for the songs "Weeds", "The Sign" and "Rejuvenate" were launched from this ep. While Mladja was in the army (collection autumn/winter '02/'03), Dino takes his place in the band and so they continue playing without a break. At the Festival in Lazarevac, the pre group Murphy's Law just opened the door for them to make a contact with new audience. In the spring of '03 a re-issue of "It's Not So Far...Plus!" comes out, enriched with live recordings and videos that were given out in xy number to the audience, zines, radio stations...The result was inevitable - positive rating from the majority of the critics population.
Chapter II – (False) Reality
A year of hard work and the album “False Reality” is finished. "Weeds" said goodbye to its fame when "Rhetoric" was heard, and the old songs could go to the group Therapy? under the flood of new melodies and fresh hits. Singles “Welcome To My World”, “Can’t Change The World” and “Absolute End” widened the circle of fans and finally mapped Serbia at the punk rock world map. “It is all very nice, but why do you sing in English” – was the main complaint of local record labels when the band tried to find the support for their album. With the help from some friends Tea Break managed to make videos for all three singles and proved that support from big productions was not necessary for quality production.
Chapter III – “Troublemaker”
After drummer Dusko left the band, Kuki took over the drum sticks and after several months of work they recorded three new songs in Belgrade studio Akademija. In contrast to previous releases that were produced in cooperation with Dino Dolnicar, “Troublemaker” was signed by Marko Jovanovic. The new Tea Break cd-single “Troublemaker” was published as fifth release of the band for the DIY label Melody Makers Music. The songs that can be found on cd are creative reaction to all that happened to the band. Changing the drummer, ignored by local record labels and media houses and the positive reaction of the audience and large number of concerts in Serbia and neighboring countries (Bulgaria and Croatia) helped the band to strengthen their attitude. With new songs Tea Break continued exactly where it stopped with the previous album “False Reality”. Recognizable melody of the songs was only complemented with Misha’s sharp voice permeated with emotions and intensity of guitar riffs was softened with precise back vocals.
The only thing left is to go out of these borders. Evil tongues – farewell !!! Punkrockers of the world – here they come!
Cheers,
Pera Janjatovic
