CITY OF OHRID--------------If you bathing in Lake Ohrid on a sunny day and suddenly emerge from its depths, breaking the surface for a moment, you will see on the pale blue expanse all around you silvery, transparent bubbles, big and small. In each of them the Sun is doubly reflected, like two focuses of different sizes. Approaching one of the bigger bubbles, holding your breath for fear it may burst, you can see in it, as in a distorting mirror, the reflection of your face, wet and laughing. And all the time, that bigger sun, like a vast star, hangs over your head. It all lasts for just an instant, like all beauty, yet it is repeated over and over again...The Ohrid saga is a millennium long saga. Since Ohrid is a city in the Republic of Macedonia with continuity and around two and a half millenniums old marks of exsistance. Within the very heart of the present city of Ohrid, the antique city of Lichnid lies, significant and rich, as is its successor. The metamorphoses of the antique Lichnid into medieval Ohrid lasted for several centuries (VI-IX), thus being created one of the most significant medieval cities on the Balkan. Through the pages of the Ohrid saga we will find the memories of the birth of the Slavic literacy and culture in the works of St. Clement and St. Naum, students of Thessaloniki brothers Sts. Cyril and Metodij. St. Clement is worshiped as a patron of the city, and his three-decade work in the city (886-916) initiated the foundation of the Clement Slavic University. The Ohrid saga cherries the memories of the Samuel Empire, too, as its capitol at the beginning of the XI century. It nourishes the testimonies of the Ohrid Archibishopry - a significant church organization, which pedestal was shared by influential philosophers, writers and theologians. Its worthy successor is the present Macedonian Orthodox Church. The Ohrid saga was composed by the stormy pages of the past, and the testimonies for some of them have reached the present days; the Monastery of St. Clement - St. Pantelejmon, the Monastery of St. Naum, the cathedral church of St. Sophia, the church of St. Clement, the church of St. John the Baptist, as many other pieces of art: frescoes, icons, manuscripts, all of them woven in the City of UNESCO - Ohrid.THEY HAVE SAID OF LAKE OHRID AND THE TOWN OF OHRID: "A person might say that in front of him lies a part of the sea detached from the ocean and cast among inaccessible mountains which surround it on all sides. "Macedonia's fresh - water sea" is a name that more than merely fits the Lake of Ohrid".(Academician Dr. Sinisa Stankovic, Yugoslav biologist, 1959)"I have visited the churches in Ohrid: there are around thirty of them. They provide unique proof that between Byzantine ecclesiastical art, Ravenna and Sicily, on the one hand, and the Italian Renaissance, on the other, there was no void. Ohrid is a notable bridge in European art..."(Sir Herbert Read, British art historian, 1961)"Indeed I came to Ohrid in 1945 for the frescoes...Our Renaissance is completely unknown to the west, which for a long time did not understand the Slavonic contribution to contemporary painting..."(Ilya Ehrenburg, the Soviet writer, 1965)"Looking at the frescoes in St. Sophia in Ohrid, one sees how the unknown artists achieved the artistic resolutions of their compositions. It is completely unjustified to speak of the existence of a purely Byzantine school".(David. Talbot Rice, British Byzantine scholar 1961)
