About Me

Let me see... I am the Queen of France, haute couture, and décoration d’intérieurs. I am resented by the French citizenry for my foreign birth and extravagant lifestyle. I have gone down in history as the arrogant and apathetic monarch who said "let them eat " when told the peasants were starving. These days most scholars dismiss the quote as being revolutionary propaganda, but I was well-known to have spent wildly as a young queen before tempering things a bit as I've matured. I am the daughter of Francis I and Maria Theresa, Emperor and Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. I left Austria for France in 1770 to marry the prince of France. In 1774 the prince became King Louis XVI and I became queen. As revolution swept Paris in 1789, the king and I tried to flee but failed. While the revolutionaries were trying to hash out a new system of government, Louis and I were stuck as prisoners at the palace at Tuileries. We tried to get help from royal supporters in England, Prussia and Austria, but in 1792 we were arrested and charged with treason. Louis was beheaded 21 January 1793 and I was beheaded 16 October 1793. It obviously didn't take. Anyhow, the story goes that my last words were an apology to the executioner for accidentally stepping on his foot.

My Interests

My intelligent and
good-natured husband,
Louis-Auguste
(the future Louis XVI).
Chateau de Versailles, where I lived from my marriage in 1770 until the siege of the palace in 1789.
Hall of Mirrors
My Boudoir
Maria Theresa, Holy Roman Empress, Queen of Hungary & Bohemia, & Archduchess of Austria. My mother had ruled the Austrian Empire for fifteen years before my birth. She was considered one of the most brilliant political figures in Europe.
My father, Holy Roman Emperor Francis I.
My brother, Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II.
Mozart was my little boy toy.
Erzherzogin Maria Antoinette 1755-93
1771
14 years old.
Dauphine in Versaillees.
18th Century Queen.
My most famous portrait, by my favorite artist, Marie Louise Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun.
1786.
My bourgeoise look.

Unhappy in my marriage, which remained unconsummated for seven years, I surrounded myself with a dissolute clique, led by Yolande de Polignac and Marie Thérèse de Lamballe. I threw myself into a life of pleasure and careless extravagance. My notorious reputation led to scandals such as the Affair of the Necklace and to rumors concerning my relations with officers of the guard and with Hans Axel Fersen. The famous solution to the bread famine, “Let them eat ,” is unjustly attributed to me, but it is certain that I lacked understanding of economic problems. With the birth of my first son, my life became more sedate.
Petit Trianon
Salon de Compagnie
One of the cottages built in my private village in 1783. The cost was not as great as my enemies pretended, but I was criticised for it nonetheless.
My loyal friend, Princess Marie Thérèse de Lamballe.
Governess to the Royal Children, Madame Yolande de Polignac.
My admirer and champion, Count Axel von Fersen

I have a Napoleon fetish

I'd like to meet:

"I was a queen, and you took away my crown; a wife, and you killed my husband; a mother, and you deprived me of my children. My blood alone remains: take it, but do not make me suffer long.”
"No one understands my ills, nor the terror that fills my breast, who does not know the heart of a mother.”
“There is nothing new except what has been forgotten.”
“I have seen all, I have heard all, I have forgotten all.”

Music:

Opera

Marie Antoinette at the Spinet, painted by Wagenschon shortly after my marriage in 1770.
I adore Wolfie. As a child, I met the young child genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He performed a short musical concert for my Imperial Family. When my mother the Empress asked him what he would like as a reward, Wolfie responded by saying he would like the hand of the Empress's youngest daughter, Maria Antonia, in marriage (much to the Empress's amusement).
