About Me

Baraná is a Turkish expression for ‘getting together, having fun'. Baraná is also the name of the duo consisting of composers and performing artists Behsat Üvez and Steven Kamperman. Together they are the artistic directors of the 8-piece ensemble Baraná & Co, the small group Baraná Trio, and several Baraná-projects.//////////The Turkish / Dutch ensemble Baraná & Co is the result of a special composition assignment at the Music Meeting 2002 to Turkish singer and multi-instrumentalist Behsat Üvez and the Dutch clarinet player Steven Kamperman. Using their duo called Baraná as a nucleus, they formed the group Baraná & Co for this occasion. Live recordings of this concert (Baraná & Co - live at the Music Meeting, LopLop records LLr 01) received raving reviews in the national and international press. In Baraná & Co they are surrounded by a word-class selection of improvising musicians: cello wizard Ernst Reijseger, Iranian percussion-expert Afra Mussawissade and Balkan specialist Monique Lansdorp on violin.Baraná & Co often performs in a larger set-up, with Kees Adolfsen on trombone, Mehmet Uludag on saz and vocals and the astonishing Cengiz Baytimur on kaval, mey, ney and zurna. Texts of the Turkish Humanist-poet Yunus Emre inspire a voyage through Turkish traditional scales, exciting rhythms, witty improvisations and sounds of contemporary music.//////////At first sight Baraná Trio may seem a remarkable combination of musicians from radically different backgrounds. What do singer/multi-instrumentalist Behsat Üvez, trained in Turkish traditional music, jazz-clarinettit Steven Kamperman and contemporary music accordeonist Bart Lelivelt have in common? Luckily, music is not about the eye, but about the ears. From this perspective, Baraná Trio proofs a combination of three natural improvisers, who perfectly understand each other. The trio is the small brother of the internationally acclaimed eight piece band Baraná & Co. A new composed program revolves around the classical Turkish theme of the eternal love of the Nightingale for the rose... Burning ballads and hunting rhythms form the starting point for playful and adventurous improvisations. (CD Barana Trio comes soon!!!)Bart Lelivelt has played with Het Rotterdams Philharmisch Orkest, Ives Ensemble, Nederlands Kamerorkest, Nieuw Ensemble, Doelen Ensemble, singer Shura Lipovsky, Sean Bergin and at festivals in numerous cities, including Amsterdam, Rome, Berlin, and St. Petersburg.
