Welcome to the Karnatic Lab Records myspace page, from the Karnatic Lab Foundation in the Netherlands, presenting new music from the cutting edge generation of classical and improvising musicians in Amsterdam.
Since 1999 the Karnatic Lab foundation has presented concerts, festivals and ensembles in Amsterdam and through-out Europe.
The goal of the Karnatic Lab is to stimulate a living exchange between the music of today and traditional music from around the world. This rich zone is explored through the programming of a variety of styles, from traditional non-western to music of all styles and periods in the west that explore similar elements. There is a special emphasis on new music, wether composed, improvised or a combination of both.
The basis activities of the Karnatic Lab are the monthly concerts in the Muziekcentrum de Badcuyp and an annual festival in the main new music halls in Amsterdam - Muziekgebouw, Bimhuis and Tropentheater. Musicians and composers are invited to participate, either exploring non-western musical ideas, or by experimenting directly along the lines of rhythm, microtonality or ornamentation, whether having a non-western influence or not. Different styles of music confront each other in the concerts and both Karnatic Lab ensembles and guests perform, from new voices to proven masters.
In addition to its concerts, the Karnatic Lab also manages several groups, including the Axyz Ensemble, Messing met PVC, the Spinifex Orchestra, STriCat and Hexnut.
In 2005 the Karnatic Lab kicked off its record label, Karnatic Lab Records, devoted to promoting new music from ensembles, performers and composers.
