The experimental-impro-jazz-o-mation trio "Veenendaal/Kneer/Sun" is constantly looking for new boundaries and deeper interplay. They are based in Amsterdam, a melting pot of diverse cultures and rich impressions.
These three authentic musicians are led by intuition and mutual inspiration. Drawing on a vast vocabulary of improvisational techniques
they welcome the surprise and cherish the unexpected.
Composition and improvisation are organically merged.
Their performances are led by a strong sense of form and groove
and can best be described as epical musical adventures. Albert van Veenendaal refers to himself as a 'pictorial musician' due to the epical and cinematic character of his music. Besides working with musicians throughout Europe he immerses himself in multidisciplinary projects, collaborating with writers, dancers, and visual artists. His unconventional and intuitive approach is instantly recognized.
Meinrad Kneer operates on the border between Jazz, improvised, ethnic and contemporary music. He has toured extensively throughout (eastern) Europe and was awarded the prestigious "Jur Naessens Muziek Prijs" in 2002. Next to being an in-demand bass player he co-founded the record label "Evil Rabbit Records" together with van Veenendaal in 2006.
Yonga Sun is a musical chameleon. He is praised for his dynamic, inventive and interactive playing. Always on-the-edge and in-the-moment he keeps propelling the music to new levels. He won the "Dutch Jazz Competition" in 2005, including the "Best Soloist Prize".
Here's what the press thinks:
"[The group] appears to be a classical piano trio, but it is not. The tradional division of roles between soloist and accompanist was abondoned resolutely in pieces of music bearing telling titles and a clear signature." (NRC Handelsblad)
The "concert already started with great intensity due to the musicians' enthusiasm and technical conviction. […]
Given they were asked for an encore even after more than two hours […] one can assume that this trio is on its way with
their intelligent compositions and free group improvisations." (Leidsch Dagblad)
"Pianist Albert van Veenendaal stimulatingly steers a middle course between intelligent abstraction and melodic lyricism."
(Volkskrant)
"Kneer stands out by means of his flexible articulation on double bass." (Leidsch Dagblad)
Yonga Sun displays "a high level of artistry, dazzling technique without gimmicks, provoking dynamics, the complete use
of the drum pallet and a strong communicative partner." (Jury Dutch Jazz Competition)
"[..] een groot muzikaal feest in het Bethaniënklooster. Het trio Van Veenendaal/Kneer/Sun speelde een voortreffelijke set. De kracht van het trio is de inter-actie tussen de uiterst muzikale musici onderling. Dat leverde verfrissende en vreugde-volle momenten op." (Draai om je oren)
