Celebrating 20 Years of Keeping the Blues Alive

About Me

The Cascade Blues Association is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization located in Portland, Oregon. Celebrating our 20th anniversary in 2006 of promoting, supporting and preserving the blues and blues-related music throughout the Pacific Northwest. One of the largest and most viable blues societies in the country, we are affiliated with the Memphis-based Blues Foundation.Portland is a thriving city when it comes to blues music. Multiple venues throughout the city make it possible to catch live blues seven nights a week, 365 days a year. There is a rich wealth of talent in the city as well, world-class performers have lived here for many years and still more continue to relocate to the city every year. Portland is also home of the 2nd largest blues festival in the United States, the massive Waterfront Blues Festival. The Cascade Blues Association offers many programs and benfits to its members. Among these are the annual Muddy Awards, presented to the highest achieveing indiviudals, events and venues selected by our membership; Our Blues Education / Blues in the Schools program is a combined effort with Six String Central School of Guitar, headed by Robbie Laws and Jerri Shelton, bringing in young musicians performing blues directly into the schools, older artists also available for presentations; Musician's Relief Fund to aid down on their luck local musicians with no where else to turn; the BluesNotes newpaper delivered monthly to members and available at multiple locations throughout the Portland Metro area, co-sponsored events at many venues allowing a $1 discount at the door at most locations; an annual holiday party in December, a members picnic in August, both featuring live music; and our monthly meetings. The monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at The Melody Ballroom, 615 SE Alder, Portland, OR. They are free and open to the public in a non-smoking atmosphere. Beginning at 7:00 pm and going until 9:00 pm, there are always two sets of music (usually opening with an acoustic act and finishing with an electric set) and multiple giveaways. There is usually a raffle for a multiple-CD package with tickets going for $1 each. For a full monthly calendar of who is playing blues in Portland and the surrounding areas, plus full feature articles, go to http://www.cascadeblues.org.
