Mary Macpherson(1821 - 1898) An ordinary crofting woman who last century composed many of the greatest Gaelic songs of all time.
She also played a significant
part when the crofters regained control of their land from harsh landlords
The Land League was an organisation devoted to resisting the Highland Clearances in the mid to late nineteenth century. Many songs were written by (Mary MacPherson) from Skye in support of their cause.
In 1882, John MacPherson, Milovaig led an uprising against the landlord of the Glendale Estate, who was trying to clear the crofters from their land to make way for Sheep!
This led to the Royal Navy gunboat, Jackal, landing a troupe of marines at Meanish Pier in early 1883 to aid MacPherson's arrest. MacPherson being taken to Edinburgh and imprisoned for two months.
His noble stance encouraged others into defiance and the actions of these "Glendale Martyrs" led to the formation of the Napier Commission and security of tenure for crofters throughout Scotland.
