THE SAD TRUTH ABOUT YOU PET STORE PUPPY.....PLEASE READ:THINKING ABOUT 'BUYING' A PUPPY...Althougth they will never admit it, local pet stores and the people who sell dogs through Pennysaver and The Journal News classifieds rely on puppy mills to supply the dogs they sell to the uneducated public. Veterinarians warn people against purchasing puppies at pet stores and through classified ads because many sell puppies that come from puppy mills or inexperienced backyard-hobby breeders. Puppy mills are cruel, mass dog-breeding facilities. The documented problems of puppy mills include overbreeding, inbreeding, minimal veterinary care, poor quality of food and shelter, lack of socialization with humans, overcrowded cages, and the killing of unwanted animals. To the unwitting consumer, this situation frequently means buying a puppy facing an array of immediate veterinary problems or harboring genetically borne diseases that do not appear until years later. Time magazine estimated that as many as 25% of purebred dogs were afflicted with serious genetic problems.Buying a puppy from a pet store or through a classified ad is clearly BUYER BEWARE. To protect yourself from buying a puppy mill puppy and to learn about puppy mills, visit the Humane Society of the United States' Stop Puppy Mills Web site.If you want a dog in your life, don't buy a puppy mill puppy. Pet store clerks and other sellers will never admit their dogs come from puppy mills. How do you separate fact from fiction? The facts:A "USDA-inspected" breeder does not mean a "good" breeder. Be wary of claims by pet store staff that they sell animals only from breeders who are "USDA-inspected." The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)enforces the federal law called the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), which regulates commercial breeding operations. But the act doesn't require all commercial breeders to be licensed, and the USDA establishes only minimum-care standards in enforcing this law. Breeders are required to provide food, water, and shelterbut not love, socialization, or freedom genetic defects or from confining cages. Many USDA-licensed and inspected puppy mills operate under squalid conditions with known violations of the AWA.Many disreputable "breeders" sell their dogs directly to the public over the Internet and through newspaper ads. They often sell several breeds of dogs, but may advertise each breed in a separate place and not in one large advertisement or website. These breeders are not required to be inspected by any federal agency and, in many states, are not inspected at all. Don't be misled by claims dogs for sale were not bred in puppy mills. Insist on seeing breed registry papers or the interstate health certificate for each puppy. The papers will list the breeder's and/or wholesaler's name and address.Reputable breeders care where their puppies go and interview hopeful adopters. They don't ever sell through pet stores or to families they haven't thoroughly checked out.Purebred "papers" do not guarantee the quality of the breeder or the dog. Even the American Kennel Club (AKC) readily admits that it "cannot guarantee the quality or health of dogs in its registry."Puppy mill puppies often have medical problems. These problems can lead to veterinary bills in the thousands of dollars. But pet retailers count on the bond between families and their new puppies being so strong that the puppies won't be returned. And guarantees are often so difficult to comply with that they are virtually useless. In addition, poor breeding and socialization practices at many puppy mills can lead to behavioral problems throughout the puppies' lives.FOR MORE INFO, PLEASE GO TO WWW.STOPPUPPYMILLS.COMjust be warned, what you will see will break your heart !
Music:
Millions of forgotten animals are sure to die,
Because too many people would rather buy.
Despondent and lonely they patiently wait;
Each day that passes may be too late.
Our pounds and shelters are filled to the brim
If not adopted soon the outcome is grim. Our pet stores are filled with puppies and kittens
One look in their eyes and consumers are smitten.
Treated as crops they are shipped to and fro
From breeders to brokers to pet stores they go.
Their parents suffer untold misery and despair
Could it be because the public doesn't care?Breeding animals suffer in small cages forever
Our "best friends" reduced to a business endeavor.
Living conditions never meet basic needs,
Prisoners of an industry driven by greed.
Avoid the pet store and "impulse buy"
Adopt instead, so homeless animals won't die.Be a guardian, not an "owner"!PIT BULL POEMTheir love is like no other,
their heart as pure as gold.
Yet while going on a friendly walk,
they're faced with stares of cold. They're so very close to human,
in how they act and what they do,
Unless you've known their devoted love,
it's impossible to explain to you. They are greatly more misunderstood,
than any other breed.
We tend to punish this loyal dog,
Instead of mankind's deeds. They are always and forever clowns,
with a wish for center stage.
Yet while displaying this sense of humor,
most people disengage. They, oh, so want to make new friends,
and run and jump and play.
Yet when they happily approach,
most people shy away.Often I've seen children poke,
or hop on for a ride.
And when I felt they might get mad,
they've only beamed with pride.I've seen these children yank and pull,
with nary a reaction.
Yet media's not interested,
unless they've put someone in traction. When other dogs have made the news,
this breed's name they affix.
But when this brave dog saves the day,
they call him "Boxer mix".They love to snuggle up real close,
to give lots of loves and kisses,
Yet they suffer more than any,
from unfair prejudices.Their tails wag hard and hips twist, too,
more so than other mutts.
So those of us who know the breed,
we call them "wiggle butts".What animal do I speak of,
Whose love is so unique?
If you've truly known one,
you know of whom I speak. There is no creature on this Earth
who will ever make you merrier.
The animal I do speak of,
it's the American Pit Bull Terrier.Author Unknown
