Monktail Creative Music Concern

A lie is composed; the truth is improvised.

About Me

.. The Monktail Creative Music Concern is a collective of composers, musicians and artists based in Seattle, WA who thrive on the atypical and exigent; the real weirdo stuff.
The MCMC exists to provide, propagate, promote, produce and preserve creative / experimental / exploratory music and associated art forms in its community through public performance, public and private educational forums, broadcasts, musical and visual recordings, and any other means of documentation appropriate and/or available at any time.
The folks involved get together under different aliases contingent on their predilection within any situation that permits them to exist. Groups range from 2 to 10 players generally, and have free improvisation/spontaneous composition as their underlying principle. Curating these specialized ensembles presents the group members with the unique opportunity to improvise in many different contexts as a performance of one particular unit organically mutates into another, offering the listener the unparalleled, or at least amusing, experience of live, acoustic, sonic gymnastic hallucinations. It's a gas.
John Seman and Mark Ostrowski founded Monktail in 1990 as an outlet for young improvisers and unusual music makers, for exploring improvisation in all its forms. We chronicle every performance and distribute the recordings amongst ourselves and other interested parties because new improvised music only exists in the moment of creation (oh, jeezus thats pretentious) and, but seriously, that's what were really getting at. Our society, even at a very localized level, is shaping itself by the art we create (or destroy) and it is up to us as individuals to determine what form we want it to take. Music needs ears to exist and the McShit Pies the music of industry produces are so disposable, so lubricated as to be derivative of another orifice, not the ear. Charles Ives said, "Beauty in music is too often confused with something that lets the ear lie back in an easy chair." The ear bone is connected to the brain sack, so don't hold your end shut; spew that love all over this place like a motherfucker. If some government wants to record every move you make, at least make it interesting. That's what were trying to do.
Monktail Creative Music Concern Records is distributed through NorthCountry Distribution.

Sounds Like: cutting your own hair. There are about 20 of us now, cut from every swath of the American musical quilt, and we dont really play jazz, but channel surf through whatever genre or context fits a performance. We're a chamber orchestra that plays jazz, a jazz band that plays metal, a metal band that plays country, a country band that plays funk, a funk band that plays punk, a punk band that plays music, musicians having a good time. Basically, we're the retarded children of art music and were running with scissors.

Where's the Any key?

Monktail has had a considerable web presence since 1995, and we've always tried to keep up with trends (the forum, which just took a dump and other things) and everyone (even Stephen Jackson) has said...
