About Me

After her feet went kaput as a dancer (her last days as a modern dancer were at The Juilliard School) she took-up guitar & songwriting as her next art form. She originally set off on documentary filmmaking after Juilliard (receiving a BFA in Film from New York University) but music became more a more compelling interest. Meeting Chris Whitley at age 19 was a major influence in her guitar-playing and wanting pursue music. A childhood listening to Lotte Lenya, Frank Sinatra & Marlene Dietrich started her on her road to being a torch singer. She also was inspired to further her exploration of finger-picking and complex chords after being introduced to Nick Drake. Guitarists from Mali and the Angolan guitarist/singer-songwriter Waldemar Bastos also were heavy influences. ************************************************************ ******************************************* She performs as The Elizabeth Carpenter Quartet, Trio, Duo and solo, with a repertoire of over 50 original songs & 15 arrangements of jazz & pop standards ("Skylark" & "Surabaya Johnny" are some of her signature songs). * STYLE :: Carpenter's DISSONANT ROOTS MUSIC evolved from Blues, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Soul, Latin and Folk traditions. Audiences have compared her to a wide-range of female vocalists & composers - Sam Phillips, Joni Mitchell, Nellie McKay, Ute Lemper, Beth Orton, Dido, Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall, Aimee Mann and Michelle Shocked. * RECORDINGS: Listen to all songs or buy CD's at CDBABY.COM CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO ALL HER SONGS * FLIRTING © 2005 - Click here to BUY CD FLIRTING ~ Her most recent 11 track CD Pop/Rock/Jazz/Soul: Which includes 2 cover songs by HOAGY CARMICHAEL - "SKYLARK" & "BALTIMORE ORIOLE" * For a review on Collected Sounds, COLLECTED SOUNDS REVIEW *EMERGENCY LOVE© 2003 - click to BUY the CD Emergency Love14 track CD on Blueweed Records Her song "Unexpected" made the top Jazz list catagory on Amercian Idol Underground's May list. click here for American Underground rating page*THE BLUEWEED SONGS © 2001 - Her 14 track CD of her more BluesFolk oriented tunes on Blue Girl Records: click here to buy this CD * She also performs as a jazz & standards vocalist with well-known pianist & composer Victor Janusz. Sounds Like: Picture Mae West & Dorothy Parker forming a duo with an Everything But The Girl sound, add a dash of Motown, some shades of Jimi Hendrix, a pinch of PJ Harvey, sultry jazz in the manner of Cassandra Wilson & a smatter of Dido. Some liken her to Aimee Mann, Sam Phillips, often to Joni Mitchell, KD Lang, Joan Armatrading, Nellie McKay, Peggy Lee, Laura Nyro and Carol King.
