Maria Callas and Tito Gobbi.
Second Act Tosca from Royal Opera House London

The jewelry used by Maria Callas in 1956, for her MET debut in Tosca, is made of about 200 Swarovski crystals. The set consists of a tiara, earings and necklace and was created specifically for Callas by the Atelier Marangoni (Milano, Italy). The estimated cost of this shinning set is of approximately $85,000, and is own, at present, by Swarovski. Sopranos Adrianne Pieczonka and Georgina Lukacs have worn the same set this year in some performances of Tosca by the LA opera. For complete trivia check my latest blog

THE HISTORICAL MOMENT
In February 1798, the short lived Roman Republic is funded and backed by Napoleon. It survives only up to April 1799.
After the fall of the Republic, Maria Carolina Habsburg (wife of the king of Naples and sister of Marie Antoinette of France) installs a reign of terror in Rome prosecuting intelectuals and artists with republican ideas.
On sunday June 14 1800 Napoleonُ s army defeats the Austrian army in Marengo near Torino. The recipe of chicken Marengo is created by Napoleonُ s personal chef after the battle.
Three days after (Wednesday 17 of June) the drama of Tosca unfolds in Rome. News of Napoleonُ s victory in Marengo give some hope to Cavaradossi and Angelotti ("Vittoria, vittoria!!! Lُ alba vindice appar! che fa gli empi tremar Libertá, sorge, crollan tirannidi" cryes out Mario, in the second act, when he overhears news from Marengo).
Everything ends in disaster. The tragedy continues after the useless deaths of Tosca, Cavaradossi and Angelotti, since Napoleon finally pacts with Pope Pious VII betraying thus his support to the Republican ideals in Rome.
