This is my poem for Burma,
dedicated to
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
Myanmar ~ Burma (poem)
MYANMAR ~ BURMA
Monks and nuns are marching
in their saffron orange robes
their shaved heads and bare feet show
the renunciation in their ways
the purity of their intent...
Military gun men are marching
in their olive green uniforms
their helmets and black boots convey
the domination in their goals
the brutality of their scheme...
Men and women are marching
in the streets carrying children
their tears and cries reveal
the desperation in their lives
the humanity of their plight...
The whole world is marching
in outrage East and West
their signed petitions impart
the indignation in their conscious
the solidarity of their support...
saffron revolution
like the blood running
through the arteries
of golden cities
they walked peacefully
solemnly praying for freedom
like garlands of human pearls
the people holding hands
held them treasured
safeguarding them
in their passage
together they crossed rivers
in shared pathway
across golden metropolis
and the water ran warm
caressing their steadfast march
they did not stop
for the rain striking
their bald shaved heads
soaking their orangered tunics
getting their feet wet
in the rain
in the sun
in the water
a saffron column of spirit
of a subdued broken country
and thousands of people
joined their procession
with their chants
with their banners
with the same hope
like peaceable warriors
they sat quietly invoking the Buddha
before the armed forces
of cruel tyrant militia
menaced exerting repression
until the slave soldiers
with shameful faces
under their green helmets
behind huge metal shields
stormed slaying retaliation bullets
and the people ran
and the monks ran
like gold streaming
through bloddy cities
desperately crying for freedom
