MARCAHUASI - ENIGMATIC STONES IN THE PERUVIAN ANDESThe Mexican photographer Martha Elva Velázquez has in her recent exhibition, Reflexiones de la Tierra, proposed a task that would seem impossible: to capture in that motionless instant full of light that is photography, something as complex, and in perpetual movement, as the secret architecture of the earth: the theater of shadows, reflections, shapes and colors that hides in the most unsuspected corners of reality. From her artistic vocation and her strive to find the hidden faces of the planet this assembly of images was born: a pure realistic expression of the outside world, even though some of them could be seen as abstracts compositions. This exhibition has been conceived as a tribute to the Earth as the place where the work of the artist grows and flourishes, and where our origin and fate lies. It shows us Planet Earth as a mirror for our memories. These images are a pictorial object in motion, a colorful artifact where signs and symbols circulate freely. Passion and reflection coexist beneath Martha Velazquez’s particular vision of her world. It is a work brimming with contrast and texture, a monument of light and shadow, and finally, a transfiguration of the reality, that shows us this unique artist’s experiences from her journeys around the Planet.Mexican writer Octavio Paz referred with these words to the art of photography: "The lens is a powerful extension of the eye, and nevertheless, what the photography shows us once the film has been developed, is something that eye did not see or that memory could not retain. The camera is all at once, the eye that looks, the memory that preserves and the imagination that composes. Imagine, compose and create are adjacent verbs. By the composition, the photography is an art".This is the first solo exhibition of a singular Mexican artist that has lived for many years in Denmark and certainly it could be just the beginning of an outstanding career, considering the fact that in Mexico we have had a powerful tradition on masters of the photography. With this activity the Embassy of Mexico in Denmark and the Cultural Institute of Mexico in Copenhagen are proudly celebrating the International Earth Day.Copenhagen, April 22nd 2008
