Sarah MacDougall and the Heroes
You might call it alternative country noir mixed with foot-stompin' rhythms and European folk-ballad traditions. You might hear something else. No matter what your definition is, it is heart-wide-open music that could make you cry but it will probably also make you want to dance. MacDougall's songs are beautiful and heartbreaking but still joyous observations of herself, people, animals, and places. It is about goose-bumps, closeness, excitement, death, life, and letting go. About being real and alive.MacDougall has been playing music since she was young, recording her earliest creations on her portable 4-track in her bedroom. In 2004 she gathered musicians to play on her debut album "Headed for the hills" and they have played together ever since. The band was recently baptized with a well-deserved name: "The Heroes". The heroes consist of Tim Tweedale on dobro, Russell Sholberg on bass, euphonium and saw, Shawn Killaly on drums and percussion, Pierre Lumoncel on violin, and Joanna Chapman Smith on clarinet, mandolin and vocals. The influences range from swedish and russian folk music to Lucinda Williams to pop and classical.
"Sarah's music is honest, open, and beautiful - it makes an imediate emotional
connection with the listener."- Steve Bellamy, Juno-winning Music Producer/Engineer
"a beautiful voice fronting rustic-leaning songs.....the perfect soundtrack
to an Appalachian train hopping journey"......- Meeghan Maultsaid, Artistic director, Under the Volcano Festival Vancouver
