About Me

Joanna playfully braids the striking sounds of Vaudeville Folk with the warm flavours of Jazz & Blues. With an exquisite vocal style and artful lyrics - this offbeat singer/songwriter puts on a feisty show! Joanna Chapman-Smith has been living and performing in Vancouver, BC for the past four years. Joanna is primarily a multi-instrumentalist and composer/songwriter, performing in many styles including Gamelan, Jazz, Folk and Music for Contemporary Dance. Joanna holds a BFA in music from Simon Fraser University - she sings, plays drums, piano, clarinet, mandolin, lapsteel, flute, accordion and guitar. In 2006 Joanna completed her first full-length album, Eyre Corvidae. Joanna's passion and her joy of life come across in this touching collection of folk songs. Even when serious, this music remains uplifting.Joanna is currently recording her second album ("Contraries" 2008) at Rear Window Sound & Song with Co-Producer Adam Popowitz (Mariam Matossian, T. Nile). This album represents the high energy and innovation of Joanna's new repertoire. Joining her on this recording is her boistrous ensemble, including Wayne Adams on bgs & percussion, Dawn Zoe on bgs & accordion and Justine Fischer on bgs & stand-up bass. Also in 2008, Joanna will appear in a live-action remake of the National Film Board's "The Log Driver's Waltz" as the lovable young woman who just can't stop singing about Canadian log-burlers.
