"the Black and White master"
About Backline Photography by Bill Hale ~ Chief Photographer/Photo Editor of Metal Rendezvous Int. Heavy Rock-Metal Magazine
Backline Photography as a concept is an attempt to recapture the superbly expressive genre of music photography from its Rock 'n' Roll roots.
This project first became a reality during the early summer of 2007 and has never looked back. Within the first month we were on Donington Download Festivals main stage with the opening band 'Zico Chain' [see image below] and Russ appears in their video 'Anemia'. Within 6 months we had produced images for use on 3 albums and expect to have our work on at least 10 albums within our first year! In February 2008 we became the official photographer for the global organization 'Rock Against Child Pornography'.
"I was first getting into music during the 70's and remember with fondness the excitement of buying a new album because this would offer me the chance of getting a little closer to my favourite bands through the generally great photography. The photography was so good for several reasons. The music industry of the time understood the importance of the imagery of music and fans wanted to see their idols as mucisians, not super models.
Successful bands recognised this and often had resident photographers who grew to understand the members of the bands they worked with and so could produce amazing images.Unfortunately the 80's & 90's witnessed music photography becoming an exercise in glamour and perfection but since when has Rock & Roll been glamorous or perfect! To me good Rock & Roll has always been dark & gritty which is why my style works well in this genre" ~ Russ.
We understand the finacial constraints suffered by emerging artists, bands & entertainers and our pricing reflects this.
Our pricing structure is simple. We charge £25 per hour for the shoot. Included is the editing time, the burning of your images onto disc, the packaging and postage [within the UK].
We do all our work on location and to cover our travelling expences we charge 25p per mile.
For example:
Your shoot takes 3 hours: 3 x £25 = £75
A round trip of 100 miles: 100 x 25p = £25
Total cost of your shoot: = £100
If your shoot is to take place outside the UK then please contact us for a quote.
All the images you see on this page, including the 'live gig' shots, are commissioned works. Unlike many 'music photographers' we have not built our portfolio by just turning up at gigs and shooting from the crowd.
We are not going to bore you by listing all our equipement here, enough to say that we use professional level NIKON cameras, lenses and flash lighting. To carry and protect our very expensive gear we use LOWEPRO bags, vests & body webbing.
Specialising in "on location" promotional photography & fully equipped to work both outdoors and indoors with available light or with a fully mobile studio.
Specifically we can photograph your band anywhere, anytime and/or for high quality promotional use. This list is not exhaustive so please contact us if your need is not mentioned here.
We can be available for any period of time needed to complete the commission, eg. documenting your bands experience at a weekend festival or a complete tour!
