About Me

The 2007-08 Pearls Of History Calendar is a Darkeye Images project. The idea for the Pearls Of History calender was conceptualised whilst Neil Mayers was working in the Inclusion Department at Crofton School in South-East London, at a time when over 85% of the inclusion students were of African or Caribbean descent. We developed a Black-History-Fact-A-Day Calendar. This calendar not only features some stunning black & white photography, but also catalogues the national days of Independence of every African country and island in the Caribbean. Additionally, the lives and achievements of inspirational black inventors; pioneers, musicians, scientists, artists and athletes are celebrated on every single day of the calendar year. We found that all students from gifted & talented to A.D.D. students equally benefited from the ‘bite-size’ information displayed, were eager to find out what significant events occurred on their birthdays, and were proud to educate their peers on their newly acquired knowledge.
Some other important features that distinguish this resource are that:
1. This is a 16-month calendar (Sept 2007 - Dec 2008) so that it can be used both as an academic and standard calendar.
2. Although a lot of the available information on "Black History" is African-American History, for this calendar we have placed a strong emphasis on Black British history.
