Africa Beyond

About Me

The legacy of Africa 05 lives on and is re-named Africa Beyond. Join us to build a network of support for African arts in the UK.
Beyond what? Beyond 2005, beyond the geographical borders of the continent, and beyond any preconceptions about Africa and its arts.
In 2005 the Africa 05 programme successfully established itself as the biggest ever celebration of African culture in Britain. The broad and successful range of collaborations and partnerships that Africa 05 forged with curators, artists, museums, festivals, commercial partners and sponsors will be sustained through an evolving network of creative expression and support for contemporary African arts within the UK.
Africa Beyond will feature a smaller, but equally lively programme of public events, working with an eclectic range of partners to help bring together both mainstream, community and diaspora audiences. The African Artist Links programme will continue the Fellowship scheme, which saw eight artist residencies funded by Arts Council England and the Gulbenkian during Africa 05, with another two given for 2006-7.
Africa Beyond will cast its net right across the African continent to illustrate the diverse and complex cultures of the 54 African nations and the Diaspora - in cinema, television, photography, literature, music, architecture, visual art, history, craft, design, performing arts, workshops and debate. We will continue promoting the artistic dynamism of African life and culture, to maintain its space within the modern UK landscape.
