MAPCO News

29 July 2007

I have just displayed a map of London and Environs from 1837 on the MAPCO website. It is:

Cary's New Plan Of London And Its Vicinity 1837 .

Use the thumbnails to navigate your way around the map. Hovering your mouse pointer over the thumbnails will display a pop-up message showing the areas covered by that map section.

There are also 2 enlarged images of each map section. These are accessed by clicking on the left half or right half of the map image itself. Again, a pop-up "Click To Enlarge" message will be displayed when you hover your mouse pointer over the image.

This is one of the finest London maps displayed on the MAPCO website. Someone recently described the MAPCO's maps as "deliciously hi-res". This has always been MAPCO's aim, and I think that this Cary map from 1837 is one of the best yet. I do hope that you enjoy it.

Work on Cary's New Plan Of London 1837 commenced some time ago, but I have only found time to complete it in the past day. I apologise for the delay in displaying this map, and hope that it has been worth the wait. This map of London is the first of many that will be displayed in coming months.

Enjoy this beautiful map!

I have just displayed Cross's London Guide 1851 .

This map of London by Joseph Cross was produced for visitors to the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park.

This map is unique amongst the MAPCO collection as it printed on silk, the texture of which is clearly visible in the scans. It has suffered some staining over the years, the eastern sections of the map having a water stain showing over the entire height of the map. Despite this flaw the map is in excellent condition for its age, given that it is printed directly onto silk and is not reinforced in any way. The hand colouring is still bright and vibrant after 156 years.

Having a map from 1851, being both a significant census year as well as the year of the Great Exhibition, is a wonderful addition to the MAPCO collection.

I hope that you find this pretty little map of interest.

Samuel Lewis's Map Of Scotland c1840 is now online! This is a huge and highly detailed map, measuring 134cm x 194cm.

The full title of this map is:

A Map of Scotland Divided Into Counties Shewing The Principal Roads, Railways, Rivers, Canals , Lochs, Mountains, Islands &c. On A Scale Of Five Miles To An Inch.

This map is a companion to Samuel Lewis's very large and highly detailed Map Of England & Wales c1840 already on display.

Enjoy!
