AND HERE ARE ARTIST IMPRESSIONS OF WHAT CAMDEN MIGHT BE TURNED INTO.... ..About The Stables Market
Once a home for the horses who worked in Camden's large goods depot, this was originally called the Old Stables. When it opened as the Stables Market in the early-80s, this was nothing more than a rough car park with a few stalls selling bric-a-brac. However when Camden Lock Market was redeveloped in 1991, The Stables expanded and it is now the best market in the area. It specialises in antiques, new pine furniture, carpets and rugs. There are also lots of clothes stalls - which range from Sparkle Moore's 50's clothing and accessories to goth gear and fetish wear - plus the usual range of arts, crafts, records and CDs.
"The Stables has that pioneering, treasure hunt feel to it" says Sylvia Keogh, one of the original stall holders at Camden Lock Market. "Those fantastic buildings have always been a goldmine sitting there waiting to be exploited".
Over the years, many musicians have run stalls at The Stables including Boz Boorer, a former Polecat who is Morrissey's longterm guitarist; Chris Farlowe, who had a Number One hit with Out of Time in 1966; Alan Williams, who was the Beatles' first manager; and Mary Byker, who rented out a stall to sell off Gaye Bykers on Acid T-shirts after the band split up. “I can remember selling a Bykers T-shirt to Kyle Minogue,” he says. “I don’t remember what the T-shirt had on it, I just remember it was when she was Kyle Minogue in the I Should Be So Lucky sense of Kyle Minogue - although it was when she was going out with Michael Hutchence, so she was getting a bit rock at that point.”
Jarvis Cocker also ran a one-off stall here in the late- 80s. “The reason that I ended up doing it,” he says, “was that Russell [Senior, ex-Pulp guitarist] was an antiques dealer and he brought down all the rubbish that he couldn’t sell and told us that, if we flogged any of it at Camden, he’d give us half the money. We took some stuff of our own as well and we sold quite a lot of it. But then I spent all my money on walking round the other stalls and seeing things that I liked. Can I remember what I bought? I can actually, cos it was probably one of my worst ever items of clothing. It was this poncho, a short hooded poncho, which was bright red and blue and yellow. It was when I was in my raving days and I used to wear it to raves-God knows how I did, cos it was really thick and terribly hot. I can’t really believe that I ever wore it, but I thought it was really fantastic when I bought it.”
