After years of pondering the perfect name for an online literary journal, Greg Wharton hit transgressive gold in July 2000 when he launched suspect thoughts: a journal of subversive writing .
Then Greg decided he wanted to publish an anthology filled with the edgy type of fiction his web journal showcased. And in June 2001, Suspect Thoughts Press was born with the publication of Of the Flesh: Dangerous New Fiction. And dangerous it was as it broke all the rules en vogue in bookselling today: that anthologies should stick to one genre, one gender, and, most definitely, one sexual orientation. (Pansexual just doesn't pan out for most book buyers, alas.)
The book was beautifully designed and filled with fierce fiction. The standards had been set. And 40+ more books, just as fierce and beautiful, have come down the pipeline.
In fact, as Suspect Press has grown into its terrible infanthood, it has become known as the go-to press for hip, queer lit. Of course, not every reader craves this—poor dears—so Suspect Thoughts Press has birthed a litter of imprints worthy of any freakshow: She Devil Press for feminist fiction and nonfiction with bite; Three Roads Press for Alt-Lit served more or less str8 up; and Reverse Rapture for those who love their sacred cows well tweaked.

In March 2002, Greg moved to the Bay Area with his partner in crimes against nature, and publishing, Ian Philips .
Even before Ian and Greg shacked up to become the Keebler Elves of Bookmaking, Ian knew a thing or two about publishing. He'd worked over 15 years as managing editor of the Damron LGBT travel guide series and had published his first book, the Lambda Literary Award -winning See Dick Deconstruct with the much-missed AttaGirl Press.
In October, 2007, Greg and Ian moved everything to Cleveland where they opened a new and used progressive bookstore named—what else?— Suspect Thoughts Books .
Suspect Thoughts Press is distributed far and wide by the great folks at SPD . ASP Wholesale and Last Gasp also sell our books to cool indy bookstores like the ones you always shop at, right?!

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BOOKSELLER. SUSPECT THOUGHTS PRESS BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE WHEREVER BOOKS ARE SOLD. BUT YOU CAN ALSO ORDER THEM ONLINE THROUGH OUR SECURE ALTERNAQUEERBOOKS.COM BOOKSTORE !

PS—And no, the press isn't really 40 years old. Greg's 45 and Ian's 41. Suspect Thoughts' real birthday is June 21, 2001 (a very potent summer solstice). But you can't be 6 years old and hang around in myspaceland."The apparently too-filthy-for-San Francisco-homosexuals

My Interests

Reading and re-reading and proofing and publishing. Then rinse and repeat.

I'd like to meet:

Every misfit toy and divine freak who survived childhood, tweenhood, teenhood, adulthood and beyond, by reading a book.

PS--Just a quick housekeeping note about comments. Greg, our fearless publisher and papa bear, likes that black border on either side of the page something fierce.

So, please post a comment. We welcome all save commercials for phones and such. Just remember to keep it no wider than 3 inches or Papa Bear will delete it.

Yes, Virginia, there is such a thing as a reverse size queen.
