Freddie Blassie, the great legend of professional wrestling was born in St. Louis in 1918 and started wrestling at carnivals in the 1930's. After serving in the Navy in WW II he resumed his wrestling career and became champ for the first time in 1954. He held title belts countless times during his long carrer. Blassie was one of the most loved (and hated) wrestlers of his time. He drew large crowds everywhere he went. He loved to taunt his opponents and the fans with his trademark slogan "pencil neck geek" He wrestled all the greats of the era, often chewing thier foreheads into a bloody mess with his sharpened teeth, earning him the nickname "The Vampire". Blassie was also known as the "Hollywood Fashion Plate" for his bleached blond hair and rhinestone jackets. Freddie developed a huge following in the 60's and 70's Especially in Los Angeles where he wrestled at the Olympic Auditorium. In 1971 Blassie and his arch rival John "The Golden Greek" Tolos drew the largest crowd in California history with 25,847 paying fans at the L.A. Coliseum. After retiring from the ring in 1973, Blassie had a distinguished carrer as manager for many of the most villainous wrestlers of the 70's and 80's. Blassie also recorded several classic novelty/comedy songs such as, "King Of Men" & "Pencil Neck Geek". And his movies "My Breakfast with Blassie" & "Mr. Blassie Goes to Washington" are cult classics. He was inducted into the wrestling hall of fame in 1994. His Autobiography "Listen, You Pencil Neck Geeks" is a must read!!! Freddie passed on in 2003 but "Classy" Freddie Blassie will never be forgotten.
