Band Members: TRADITIONAL ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLAND MUSIC OF INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIA.Traditional Aboriginal music usually features the hypnotic sound of the didgeridoo (yidaki or yigi yig), accompanied with the bipperas or bilmas (clapping sticks). The Dances tell a story of the Dreamtime, of their ancestors, of their land, of their native animals, of their lives. Dances include the kangaroo, the emu, mosquito dance. The traditional singing hypnotizes back to the outback of Australia. When doing traditional dances, the dancers will generally wear a mud clay (ochre) of white, red, brown & yellow pigment.Traditional Torres Strait Island music usually features the melodic island tunes that will make you smile and want to join in. The warup drum (hour glass shaped drum) has one end covered with snake or goanna skin and the other end is hollowed out for the bass drone to release. The marap/lumut (Bamboo) drum is constantly hit with a rhythm for the dancers to island dance to. The kulap is a natural rattle/shaker that resonates whilst the dancer hand helds and shakes the goa nut seeds. Dancers may even where a traditional head dress (Dhari) or (Samu) depending on the song. Song meanings will vary from sit-down playdances to standing dances of warrior stories.
