Aboriginal Australia comes to Dunedin's Main Street
DUNEDIN- Main Street is living up to its fame of offering the most cultural diverse experiences in Tampa Bay.
The downtown cultural district, which offers tastes of Celtic, Mexican, Italian and Belgian traditions now adds the Australian aborigine and other indigenous people of the world to its shopping experience.
This week Melissa Linden and husband Wayne Warwick Williams, a notable Australian Didgeridoo craftsmen and musician opened the Tribes of the World Gallery and Walkabout Emporium at 447 Main St.
"The shop is part of the Tribes of the World , a non-profit foundation formed to preserve and cultivate all indigenous cultures around the world", Linden said.
Its mission is to give people an experience of aboriginal Australia and tribal people all over the world through their coffees, teas, foods, music, arts and other items. The organization also helps market items, created, picked, ground or made by hand by the native peoples.
Williams, who hails from the northeastern Australian state of Queensland, is of aboriginal heritage. His latest album of didgeridoo tunes is dedicated to his people, the Darumbal.
He crafts a variety of didgeridoos, one of the oldest woodwind instruments, which few people in America have heard outside of an Outback Steakhouse commercial.
Several didgeridoos and a lot of Australian art grace the downtown shop.
