YOU GOT STARBUCKS TO CHANGE!

A massive thank you to everyone who joined this group and took action… together we made a difference and forced Starbucks to make a deal with the Ethiopian government.
WHAT WAS IT ALL ABOUT?
More than a year ago, the Ethiopian government approached Starbucks global HQ in Seattle and asked the company to recognise Ethiopia’s legal ownership of the names of its coffees. Despite its much-publicised commitments to farming communities, Starbucks had not taken the Ethiopian request seriously. We asked you to send a message to Starbucks to sign the deal with the Ethiopian government so that their coffee farmers could get a fairer price for their beans and help them get out of poverty.

WHY DID STARBUCKS SIGN THE DEAL?
Nearly 6,000 of you joined this group and helped to make this happen. In total more than 96,000 Oxfam supporters, student groups, non-government organisations and Ethiopian community members contacted Starbucks to urge them to sign the agreement – by email, phone, fax and by visiting local stores. Your efforts made a huge impact on Starbucks and helped convince it to sign the deal.
WHAT DOES THE DEAL MEAN?
Now that Starbucks has acknowledged the copyright of the names Ethiopia will be able to earn millions more. In a country where about 15 million people depend on coffee to get by, that amounts to significantly more money for food, health care, and education.
Starbucks is also setting an example to other companies to stand by farmers and help them achieve a fairer price for their crops.
THANKS AGAIN... YOU ARE AMAZING!

My Interests

FACT: 15 million Ethiopians are dependent on coffee, and whilst they grow some of the world’s finest beans, they don’t see the rich profits.

FACT: For every cup of coffee sold by major coffee chain stores, farmers in coffee-growing countries like Ethiopia only earn about 3cents.

FACT: Coffee companies make billions - Starbucks alone has already made more than $5.8 billion in net revenue this year.

FACT: Control of coffee names could bring an estimated $88 million a year extra to Ethiopia and help towards lifting millions of Ethiopians out of poverty.

FACT: Companies like Starbucks can charge consumers more for Ethiopia’s finest coffees – Sidamo, Yigarcheffe and Harar – because they are considered amongst the best coffees in the world.
