The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers

About Me

BRAND NEW youtube video, check it out!!! It's a little more relaxed session for the Hilltoppers...Check out the above video of "Ol' Rattler" from Dust-to-Digital and YouTube!Found another video off You Tube...this has my grandfather Joe Birchfield & my uncle Creede:BIOGRAPHY OF A BAND:Welcome to the world of the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers. In these next pages you will become familiar with the "Ragged, but Right" cultural phenomena of Old Time Music. The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers began in the 70's as a family Old Time traditional mountain music band, originally with Elick Birchfield as the banjo player. Due to his family constraints he could not continue with the band and soon Creede Birchfield, his brother took his place rendering the "chig-a-bone" technique. Joe Birchfield, Creede's brother was the main man of the Hilltoppers playing fiddle, Bill Birchfield, Joe's son was the left handed, upside down and backwards guitar player, and Bill's wife Janice Holtsclaw-Birchfield the washtub "gutbucket" bass player. They fast became a hit with their 1968 Chevy snub nose van. Occassionally Ethel Birchfield, Bill's mother would accompany them, playing the washboard, telling stories and riddles, and making the children smile. On a few occassions, Beatrice Birchfield - Thompson, Bill's sister, would accompany them on the spoons. There was and is a collage of different musician's that make their home with the Hilltoppers, guest appearing for tunes to the delight of the crowds. The road is a difficult place, full of vehicular mechanical problems that have to be fixed, health problems, and instrument failures, but still they find the steam to fire their engines.Bill and Janice have 2 children, Deborah A.Birchfield and B.Chris Birchfield. Chris plays guitar and even traveled some with the band. Deborah helps with the internet and computer hands - on knowledge. Not only have they maintained the band on the road, but occassionally they've even had an assortment of pets with them. Once there was a robin adopted by daughter Deborah that accompanied them to the 1982 World's Fair. On another trip a white cockatiel named Jasper took Galax by storm, wolf whistling at all the pretty women. The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers list of accomplishments is rather extensive and continues being added to. As mentioned the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, as well as The Country Music Hall of Fame, Carnegie, Brandywine, The Library of Congress, Smithsonian, American Folklife Festival, numerous conventions, radio appearances, CMT, Rolling Stone Magazine, and many other television, radio, magazine, internet, etc. interviews. One of the most memorable being a visit from none other than Sid Vicious "The Sex Pistols", Boy George, and Malcolm McClaren. This visit inspired the "Duck Rock" movement of punk and landed The Roan Mountain Hilltoppers a no.9 hit on the London pop charts. All you have to do is Google the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers and be prepared to read. You will be bombarded with information. To all the fans, happy hunting and welcome to the newbies. Keep listening!Little known fact: Joe originally started playing the banjo and Creede the fiddle. Creede's original fiddle was homemade out of a cigar box.We encourage anyone and everyone to enjoy our music and spread the word that old time is here to stay and we're doing everything in our power to promote the continuation of the Arts in every state. "Let's make the world beautiful for the ears as well as the eyes."Please feel free to click and review any of our friends that you see, all are extremely talented individuals doing their best to keep the music alive. The next months are going to be an exciting time for us.
