OLD TIME BANJO GAL OF TENNESSEE. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Please visit www.myspace.

About Me

Hi. I'm a 22-year-old college girl at MTSU majoring in History. I tend to be a little on the quiet side until I know someone well. I'm very hopeful that 2008 is going to be the year of the diploma!!!
One of my great passions is playing old-time music on an open-back banjo which I have been doing since I was 15.
I'm a full-time student that has a job, teaches banjo lessons, and travels regularly performing. I'm rarely bored..ha ha ha....I just try to squeeze out every bit of life I can from each new day.
Recently, I became the first female in the 36-yr history of the Smithville Fiddlers' Jamboree in Smithville, TN, to win the Old Time Banjo championship. It was exciting and humbling.
What to say about me. . .
hmmm. I enjoy being around genuine people. I would pick hanging with a few close friends over going out partying.
I enjoy going to restaurants where you can have good food and engage in meaningful conversation. It's fun to find family owned diners and meat and threes...but, I like going to a nice restaurant, too..A great steak is my weakness.

I can't cook very well and am very thankful for frozen food, soup and peanut butter and jelly.

I love homemade chocolate pie, but strawberry pie from Shoney's is a strong second. My all-time favorite is my Mom's homemade strawberry cake w/cream cheese icing -- I get one each year for my birthday!! YUM!
I love to travel from bumpy back roads to lights of Broadway in NYC. From my point of view, I think travel is one of the greatest ways to expand your life. I'm basically a person with small-town values, who has a keen desire to see the world.
I hate to shop, avoid malls and love e-bay. I like to poke around in book stores and antique shops.
Spending time in the outdoors, tent-camping, cabins, state parks and nice walks are things I enjoy. Recently, I have discovered down-hill snow skiing...wow!
I'm a certified life guard, so I enjoy swimming and being healthy.
My humor is a little off the wall, so one of the things I look for in people is a great sense of humor and having the ability to laugh at themselves.
I find myself drawn to mischievous little kids and feisty old people. I love 'characters,' the 'non-vanilla' people who aren't afraid to be themselves.
Being thoughtful and kind to others and having manners are key parts of my life. I value honesty, dependability and being able to think 'outside the box' as traits in people. I think having goals and working hard are important.
I'm a Christian. Religion isn't a big deal to me, having a personal relationship with Christ is. I attend a nondenominational church. My faith, my family and friends are very important to me.

I'm not into smoking, drinking or drugs..but I don't go around making an issue about it. I'm not a judgmental person. Life is all about choices and I simply choose not to do that.
I like being around animals and my Dalmatian is my faithful friend.
Whew! That's more than enough about me. If you have other questions, just ask.
About my music....
Since my music is an important part of my life, I thought I would share just a little here about it.
Since I started playing this style of banjo, I have either won or placed in the finals of most of the major old time music events in the southeast including festivals at Clifftop, WVa, Galax, Va and Fiddlers Grove, NC.
While doing well at festivals is fun, the best experiences are spending time with my friends jamming and meeting older musicians, hearing their stories and learning their songs. These are special memories for me.
People are often surprised when they find out that I travel and play banjo in an award-winning, old-time string band called Delmer Holland and the Blue Creek Ramblers. The other three members are male, old enough to be my grandpas but have generously shared their music with me...and along the way, taught me a lot about life. They call me "the kid" and they are "my boys."
I do have a music myspace page myspace.com/rebekahweilerbanjo if you would like to hear some of my banjo tunes and find out where I'll be playing.

My Interests

INTERESTS

I DO LIKE

I enjoy meeting interesting people and a good acoustic jam, a nap and going out for breakfast.

I think it is fun to go riding in a pick up truck, watch a water-color sun set and see a big, full moon, as round as a dinner plate, rise in the night sky.

I like quilts, sweet tea, storms and wooden front porches with rocking chairs.
I'm fond of baseball games, most sports, happy fires, putt-putt golf, porch swings, a drive in the mountains, a canoe ride, and the ocean. I've been snorkeling in Mexico and thought it was great...I think I'd like to try scuba-diving some time.
I'm partial to off the road discoveries, ice-cold six-ounce cokes, diet green tea in a bottle, and Skittles. Real mashed potatoes, corn bread, broccoli casserole, root beer, white tic tacs, sour gummies, fresh fruit - especially watermelon, and good milk chocolate.

Myspace Quotes

I think it is fun to watch great movie classics -- especially the B & W ones and Hitchcock thrillers and Frank Capra films as It's a Wonderful Life
I enjoy listening to old radio programs from the 30s & 40s. 'Only The Shadow Knows', Sherlock Homes, Amos & Andy, Burns & Allen. I know that is different, but I'm drawn to the creative writing and mental word pictures they create in your mind...and remember I'm a history major..ha ha ha
I enjoy Prairie Home Companion on PBS...Garrison K is a modern day Mark Twain. I listen to WSM and WSIX and other radio stations that match my music interests.

I'm most comfortable in worn-out jeans, flip flops and a ball cap, BUT like to clean-up and look stylish when I'm out and about. I own cowboy boots and wear them.

Don't Like

I don't like spike high heels, liver, brussel sprouts, hot dogs, loud, overbearing or bossy people, okra, cigarette smoke, strong perfumes and colognes, vulgarity or horror movies.

I'd like to meet:

I'm going to have to think on that one . . .Maybe the Easter Bunny because Cadberry Chocolate Eggs are my great weakness and I want to know why they only hit the store shelves once a year.Get Your Own! | View Slideshow

Music:

MUSIC

I love old-time music, sacred harp and shape note singing, bluegrass, low down and lonely blues, big band, vintage pop, old jazz, honky tonk, old country, some current country, southern and black gospel.
Let's see from Nora Jones to Sinatra to Hank Williams to Koko Taylor to Del McCoury to John Hartford to Minnie Pearl..is that diverse enough...(GRIN)
Some of the best things I like listening to are the sounds of nature .. the crack of lightening, a frog hollerin', the laughter of flowing water, the rumble of a water fall, a Whip poor will or Bobwhite calling at night, the whisper of the wind...I call it's God's music.
I love music that reaches down and strikes a chord deep inside.

I enjoy going to live musicals and theatre on stage. Recently, I attended a fourth of July - outdoor concert of Sousa marches and thought it was grand.
Actually, I like most music except I just can't get into rap, hip/hop, and loud rock..you get the picture ...it just isn't me.

Movies:

MOVIES

Modern films: Field of Dreams, Finding Forrester, Steel Magnolias, Walk the Line, Princess Bride, While you were Sleeping, Something's Got to Give, Flightplan, O Brother Where Art Thou?, the STUPIDS, Danny Deckchair, Angels in the Outfield, 101 Dalmatians, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Return To Me, Sweet Home Alabama

Television:

TELEVISION

I really don't watch much TV. Actually, I grew up in a home with one set and no cable. But, when time permits I like...anything CSI related, M*A*S*H, Grey's Anatomy, Cold Case, House, Andy Griffin Show, the Beverly Hillbillies and the Ace of Cakes.

Books:

BOOKS

The Bible, Epic, American by Chris Mathews, Callie's Mountain, anything by C.S. Lewis or Calvin Miller, The best Jokes Minnie Pearl Ever Told...and Some She Overheard, The Five People You Meet in Heaven.
I enjoy savoring a good book and own way too many, however, these days I have to do more reading for college than I get to do for my own pleasure.

Heroes:

HEROES

In the 1930s and 40s it was hard to be a woman and make it in country music. These are some of the women that did and I admire their grit. They were tough, determined and they knew how to entertain. Better yet, some even played the banjo!!
Minnie Pearl; Lilly Mae Ledford (of the Coon Creek Girls), Cousin Emmy, Sister Rachel Veach (with Roy Acuff & the Smokey Mountain Boys,) Ramona Jones.
My parents for always loving me.
