Born Oct. 7th, 1961 in Columbia, TN, Earl first became interested in bluegrass music during his early teens. He started by learning to play the banjo and by the age of 16 had become an accomplished player.
After attending several local festivals and music competitions he began to notice that there would be an overwhelming number of banjo players there but maybe one or two reso players at the most. Earl then became interested in learning to play this new instrument.
With a borrowed Dobro ©, he went back to his Flatt & Scruggs albums which he had previously used to learn the Earl Scruggs style of banjo playing. This time however, he was listening to the reso stylings of Josh Graves.
Later on, Earl was influenced by the reso playing of Mike Auldridge with the Seldom Scene and also by a young up-and-coming reso player named Jerry Douglas.
To date Earl has been playing the resonator guitar for over 28 years and has worked with various local and regional bluegrass bands. Along the way he has also become an accomplished and versatile harmony vocalist. Earl is the 2006 winner of the Tennessee Resonator Guitar State Championship held annually in Cookeville, TN.
Earl now resides in Murfreesboro, TN with his wife, Lisa, and their daughter, Rachel. Earl proudly endorses Meredith Resonator Guitars and R.Poffmaker custom leather instrument straps.
