About Me

The current 2004 version was designed and built at Prototype Source in Santa Barbara, CA. This converted Chevrolet has a 4 speed / W4 series chassis that has a V8, 6.0 liter 350 Vortec 5700 engine, Anti-Lock Brake System, and a 32.1 Gallon Fuel Tank. It's 27-feet-long, 10 & ½ -feet-tall, 1,450 pounds, and seats 6. There are 13 Wienermobiles,, in the current fleet.
The Wienermobile,, has traveled in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Puerto Rico, Spain, Mexico and Germany. Each Wienermobile,, travels about 1,000 miles per week or about 50,000 per year.
History:
In 1936, Karl G. Mayer, nephew of the company's founder, introduced the 13 foot long hot dog on wheels. It drove through the streets of Chicago, promoting OSCAR MAYER® "German Style Wieners." It was built by General Body Company of Chicago at a cost of $5,000.
Between 1950 and 1954, five new Wienermobile,, vehicles were designed by Gerstenslager of Wooster, Ohio, all on a Dodge chassis. In 1958, a new design was launched, built by Willy's® Jeep Chassis.
In 1969, two Wienermobile,, vehicles were designed and built on a Chevy motor home chassis with a V-6 engine by OSCAR MAYER® mechanics at the company headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin. This was the first Wienermobile,, vehicle to tour a foreign country. This design was replicated in 1975 by Plastic Products of Milwaukee, which used the same mold to fabricate a fiberglass and styrofoam unit.
In 1988, Stevens Automotive Corporation of Milwaukee created the new design and a ten vehicle fleet. Built on a converted 1988 Chevy van chassis, it was powered by a V-6 engine.
In 1995, California automobile designer Harry Bradley created the concept of the new Wienermobile,, vehicle. It was the first Wienermobile,, constructed using CAD (computer aided design) imaging tools, by Carlin Manufacturing of Fresno, CA. The '95 version was 27-feet long, 11-feet high, 10,500 pounds, and could travel in excess of 90 mph.
The 2000 model was built by Craftsmen Industries, Inc. of St. Charles, MO. A GMC W-series chassis and a 5700 VORTEC engine make it the most powerful Wienermobile,, vehicle in the fleet. It's 27-feet long, 8-feet wide and 11-feet high.

Hotdoggers:

The Wienermobile,, crews are college graduates known as Hotdoggers, specially trained at Hot Dog High at Oscar Mayer in Madison, Wisconsin. Upon graduation, the Hotdoggers take the Hotdogger Oath:

"As official Hotdogger of the celebrated Oscar Mayer® Wienermobile,,, I salami swear to uphold the dogma set forth here, and I promise to:

Encourage wiener lovers nationwide to relish the delicacy, ketchup on the great taste of hot dogs, and give in to the craving once it's mustard. Be frank and furthermore, to be upstanding in a line for hot dogs at ball parks, barbecues, buffets, and other bashes. Journey into the streets, dachs, und ports of my community, wish well to all comers, plump and lean - and leave them with a wiener to roast about. As once I wished I were, now I am - an Oscar Mayer® Wienermobile,, Hotdogger."
