About Me
From the rubble of a mid-Michigan metropolis comes an alternative-pop outfit, paying homage to their city via poetry and jangly guitars.Automobile was formed in 1997 when roommates Dave and Mike occasionally bumped into each other in the common area of their miniscule apartment. Because of their mutual appreciation for Scorcese, the Smiths, and R.E.M. as well as their penchant for Mexican food, they decided to form a band. They called up their beautiful-voiced bookworm friend, Jenny Toms, and automobile was born. With no need for 3 guitarists, they encouraged their buddy Ryan to pick up the bass, which he did. And quickly. After a short trial run with Jenny's then-boyfriend on drums, they recruited Mark instead, and the band was complete. All five friends had met at shows in Flint, Michigan, where they had been part of multiple bands. As a band, Automobile enjoyed a good run, playing dozens of shows in Flint, East Lansing, and Ann Arbor before playing their final show in February of 1999. They finished one album, Flint, in 2000 at a friend's home studio in South Lyon, MI.Mark and Ryan continued playing together in a band called May/June. Dave started playing with a new friend Matthew Carlson, and, eventually, Jenny and Mike played together again in a group called The Good Hour.Currently, Jenny is teaching at MSU. Dave, a high school teacher, is playing americana music with indie-pop group, the Pantones. Mike works for GM. Ryan is designing websites near Boston, MA. Mark has played for a few years with smoky, indie-lounge-rock act Lingua Franca and is currently composing his own music in Brooklyn, NY. And God knows what else. He's scarce. The day might come when Jenny, Dave, and Mike play again. Stay tuned...
