Kababayan at UCI

Kababayan is the Pilipino-American organization at UC Irvine, which promotes awareness of our culture through 5 main aspects:

Academic -The academic part of our organization is a reminder of the reason why we are here at UCI - to receive the best education possible. Some of the programs that Kaba provides include Peer mentors, Test Files, Alumni Panels, Alumni Scholarships, Study Breaks, and Academic workshops. We also have the Kaba Honor Society (KHS) which recognizes and salutes the Kababayans with a 3.0+ GPA.

Community - The scope of Kaba is not simply restricted to the events at UC Irvine. This organization is constantly working towards becoming involved in the progress of the Pilipino community. We are involved in various community projests such as our annual Kababayan Conference (KabaCon), trips to historic Pilipino Town, and Fil-Am exhibitions. Members of Kababayan have also been active in community events such as Canned Food Drives, AIDS Walk, SIPA GArden Cleanup, and High School Outreaches.

Cultural -The cultural aspect of our organization is what educates us on our history and culture as Pilipino-Americans. We learn about our fellow Kababayan and heritage through many events and workshops. Some of our traditional cultural programs include Pilipino Culture Night (PCN), Pilipino History Month in October, Kultural Dance Troupe (KDT), Terrace Performances, Pilipino speakers, and our Tagalog tutorial Programs Members of Kaba are also involved with the annual Pilipino Studies Program, which allows students to study abroad in the Philippines.

Political - The political events in the Philippines directly affect the lives of Pilipinos in America. That is why Kaba is dedicated to increasing the awareness of the current political events back home. Members of Kababayan have made their voices heard through event such as the Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) rally, APAAC (Asian Pacific American Awareness Conference), FPAC (Festival of Pilipino Arts and Culture), Womensfest, and T.A.P.S. (Tagalog and Pilipino Studies at UCI campaign).

Social -Our social events are what bring us together, providing us with an opportunity to spend time together, as well as to meet new people and build new friendships. We have weekly meetings, often followed by after-events that allow members to get to know one another better. Some of our activities include a Semi-Formal dance, Tahoe ski trip, Car Rallies, Talent Show, Bonfires, Hip Hop Showcase, Broomball, Bowling Night, Friendship Games, Sportsfest, Parties, Comedy Night, Open Mic, Intramural Sports, Karaoke Night, and Movie Nights.
